Carrier film stars?
Over the Xmas break my wife settled down to watch the film Evita starring Madonna made a couple of years ago. I was just leaving the room when I was stopped. I could't believe my eyes about 5 mins into the film there is a scene with 4 sandy coloured MkII carriers driving down a road.
Got me thinking how many more films are there with carriers in them and do the owners know they own a film star. LIST Evita A Bride Too Far. The Longest Day (Great scene on beach that won't start. I know it well!!!.) Dunkirk My carrier was used in the film Atonement, (But did't make the film) Barry :coffee |

I was asked if they could use my carrier for the film (1995) but seening as i had just started a new posting i would not let it go. my mate sent his (the one that was on milweb just before christmas). They were painted sand by the film company and then back to green after they had been finished, he was appauled by the paint finish when it came back to him. It was so bad he put it at the back of the shed and left it there in shame.
My carrier "Puddle Jumper" was used in "D-Day to Berlin" along with my another mates one "Windy". If you watch the film "the way ahead" they push very realistic wooden carriers and wooden Dingos over the side of a sinking ship. There is a really brilliant film with Arthur Askey in ( i cant remember what it was called)where he is a carrier crewman, all sing and servicing early carriers. then there is the start of a "Canterbury tale" with carrier tearing through the country side and attacking a horse and cart. ok so its off to you tube ! |
not to be too critical :D but......... that light stone appears to be the wrong shade (if it is meant to be 1940's light stone) ...unless its actually desert ZI pink in which case its spot on : i would love for my carrier to get used in a film but would have to specify i drove it and had a cameo part in the movie :) now that we have more carriers in use here it would be nice for HBO to do a band of brothers type affair about other commonwealth forces other than the US of A all the time.

Hi Barry, No not mine, I understand it was one brought back from the Falkland Islands, In I think around 1982 following the war, restored and used in the film Evita, is it the same one you saw?.

Movie stars
Kevin
I remember the carrier that came back from the Falklands well we had it at Bletchley Park for many years. It was a fantastic little machine that run well. It was sold about 2002 via Carl Brown to Shaun Hindle. Shaun can tell us more what happened to her. I think it got painted green and is ever "Puddle Jumper or Windy" I know the mechanic that worked on Evita next time I see him I'll ask about the others. Who's got the one from A Bridge Too Far ? I may be wrong but did'nt Clive Huges supply those vehicles? Richard all carriers are different. Don't worry to much about the shade of paint. There are never two carriers the same colour. Now as like 1940's paint it what ever colour you can get hold of. I had to take my carrier to Buckingham Palace a few years ago and it's Guards Gloss Green, may be wrong but so right for the day. Remember if it looks right it probable is!!! A fantastic New Year to all. Barry |
Movie vehicle
Hi All
I watched an old wartime movie "Commandos Attack at Dawn" yesterday the plot is set in Norway, when the German troops envade the village they were driving "BLITZ TRUCKS", looked so strange. I would be pretty sure there were no CMP vehicles in the German Army, unless capted later in the war. Cheers Little Jo :no4: |
was the Norway affair after Dunkirk ? or before ?
|
Richard
Can I humbly suggest that the U.K had no CMP's before Dunkirk, the withdrawal from the beaches taking a week, from 26th may 1940, and all gone by the 1st june 1940.
according to my book they left behind; 2,472 guns,63,879 vehicles,20,548 motorcycles,76,097 tons of ammo. 68000 men were killed injured or taken prisoner, and 40,000 were captured when Dunkirk fell The book is called" the Sands of Dunkirk, by Richard Collier. |
A bridge too far carrier

I am the proud owner of the Bridge Too Far carrier, Baptys film hire supplied most of the vehicles for the film. John.

Carrier film stars in Canada
Very few film productions in the Toronto, Ontario area have featured carriers with three exceptions where I supplied military picture vehicles. For some reason the carrier just doesn't catch the fancy of directors.
1989 Firing Squad fleeting glimpses of a carrier. But good action shots of a Chev C15A fording a river. 1993 Dieppe - a CBC mini series has fleeting glimpses of a carrier. The difficulty in Canada was to find appropriate vehicles so we had to use mostly Cab 13 CMP's. Keep an eye out for a nice Ford Lynx if you see this mini series. 2005 Land of the Dead - George Romero directing. As Dave mentioned a carrier that he eventually acquired was used a part of a compound of derelict military vehicles. ......... Brian |
and yet the carrier was an iconic AFV of ww2 (for commonwealth forces) its wierd that you dont see them... there is a scene on the longest day when a Mk2 carrier breaks down on the sand, and the beach master gives the glacis plate a good whack and gets it going again.....other than this movie and a bridge too far i have not seen anymore on the silver screen. i maintain that HBO or someone could do some awesome stories perhaps involving the desert rats or one of the many carrier platoons during ww2 as i have no doubt there were many harrowing, exciting, full throttle moments to be told

The movie was filmed in British Columbia, Canada in 1942. I doubt authenticity of vehicles was that important at the time and cost of making replicas would have been prohibitive. Guess there were plenty of CMP trucks available, with the assistance of the Canadian army. :) |
Norman Wisdom
Hi, Just been watching a film called 'up in the world' at work starring Norman Wisdom, great scenes at the end with a T16 Carrier crashing into a stately home ball room causing mayhem.
Thats the third Norman Wisdom film we have watched today, I need to get another job!. kevin. |
There are some good shots of a T16 in "Theirs is the Glory" brilliant film about Arnhem. black and white, and a must to watch using the troops who were there, they even have a burning King Tiger !
|
Great carrier
John
Great carrier how long have you had it? I did'nt think Baptys supplied vehicles, I thought it was only weapons. Barry |
