oil cooler being made
hi fella's
i'm having an oil cooler made by an old chap local to me and i need to know the dimensions, i know the pipe is 1/2" copper but i need the height and width of the rectangle, if anyone else needs one knocking up then let me know and i'll get them made at the same time. he quoted £50 for a square section cooler using 3/8" pipe but i'd prefer to get something more original looking using the round cooling fins. any help would be appreciated eddy |
Rick. Speak with Ben he is having one made too he has used my original as a pattern.

thanks rich but ben is away for a week and i'd like to get cracking on it so if anyone has the dimensions it would be appreciated.
cheers eddy |
hi fella's
i've got hold of richies well travelled cooler and will be using that as a pattern so nobody need rush out to their carrier and measure up for me |
aww and i just ripped my carrier apart to measuer the oil cooler for you ! ha ha ha - i had a message from Ben re the flexi oil pipes. not a prob for you to copy mine that Ben has, could i ask you to get me a couple made at the same time. if you need the dosh up front just say.

Hi, may I ask anyone for outside diameter of oil cooler (incl. cooling fins) and also for the width and height of the whole cooler (rectangle)?
I assume from the above that inner diameter of pipe is 1/2. Many thanks for help in advance! |
Early carriers had two pipes running through the cooler, later carriers had one single pipe, unsure of diameter though.
I recently learned this ! |
The threaded ends are 1/2" BSP parallel thread The pipes use Rotherham fittings (I think that's what they're called)
Some were made with the wire loops and later with the discs. The 2 runs of copper pipe are half inch o.d and they sweat into a casting with the fittings (screwed??) into the bottom that the pipes connect to. The outer fitting sits lower than the inner. I will post some photos later. |

I can make them up and some pipe work too. I might have a spare set on one of my carriers to copy. |
petr i made my oil cooler using an old finned oil cooler from a saracen which i took apart and reassembled using 22mm plumbing fittings to create the 90 angles and reducers at the pipe connection end. the whole thing only took a couple of hours and cost £4

Thanks all! Yes Rick, that sounds cool! I have source of finned pipes I can make cooler from, just need to know proper outer diameter.

Oil Coolers
Is it true that the oil cooler constructed with the folded over wire are true English carrier manufacture and the coolers using the discs are the Canadian style?
|
That's my understanding Andrew, yes.

For those that may be interested ;Pictures show the 3 different types of oil coolers used in Carriers. First is the English, next the Canadian MK1*, then the LP manufactured ones for Australia and New Zealand. The NZ LP Carrier ones were made about 15 mins down the road from where I live. The Canadian one has twin tubes junctioning into a single outlet / Inlet, the LP were two separate tubes and the English one was a single tube with the wire loops.Cheers Andrew.
