CPM V8 Motor Restoration

Hi guys and gals

When we reconditioned the motor for our Bren Gun Carrier we employed a couple of old speedway racing identities one of whom has a garage/workshop. He always uses this stand for the flatheads and I was so impressed I also had one built. I have seen a variation of this design in an old CMP Workshop Manual. It is far superior to the modern end support stands. If you slightly off-centre the shafts holding the engine support plates the engine is balanced on rotation. The engine support plates bolt into the existing bolt holes that hold in the manifolds. The index wheel can be made from flat plate or a wheel rim. An ordinary shot bolt or even nut and bolt holds it in position. Ours was constructed using thick gauge angle-iron.

Happy restoring - Bob

Sorry about the size of the plan, I reduced it too much. The dimensions are 42" wide, 30" high, 30" deep, the shafts with the engine support plates and the index wheel are in the middle. Ensure the castor wheels are large enough or you allow enough ground clearance to allow the legs of an engine crane underneath.

Now for the pic

Hi Bob, an oldy but a goody thread.
I recently saw one of these stands built for a Flathead V8 for sale on ebay but it was in QLD.
A good idea I agree.
