Towing Hook Question
 

Is this a towing hook as fitted to a WW2 CMP truck or maybe British vehicle?

Appears to be the Standard CMP Hitch
 

Hi Johan

Your pictures appear to show a standard CMP hitch compare it to the pictures below the first picture is of my 1941 C60L while the truck was being restored,
2nd picture is of the hitch pintle on my 1942 C60S. I'll look for a parts book illustration. There is also a mounting plate that matches the bolt holes on the pintle which goes behind the spring.

Now to the second part of your question was it also used on British vehicles and was it used on tracked vehicles?

Just in passing because of the ridged way this is mounted to the cross spring there is no provision for rotation which was as I understand provided by the size of the lunnet on the trailer and by lunnets that rotated on Common Wealth Equipment. I mention this as US trailer lunnets of the period were not designed to rotate and as some US equipment the lunnet diameter is a tight fit on the style hitch you have. While towing US trailers on good roads is not a problem. Towing US trailers such as water trailers off road may end up in twisting the frame of the trailer.
