Lucas semi sealed headlamps
Hi guys, has anyone tried re doing the chrome reflector on a semi sealed lucas headlamp.
You know,by removing the glued on lens with out breaking it and repairing the rusty reflector for new chrome? interested in hearing your comments as the lucas semi sealed H/L are unobtainable here in NZ new. You can get 6volt sealed beam H/Lamps,but are expensive. I dont have any original Ford reflectors or lens, and my truck is fitted with semi sealed lamps that are rusting on the reflectors. |

What about halogens? I believe 6 volt H4 bulbs are available. Can you buy the semi seal headlamps for them? I have one here.

Hi Lynn, are they the ones with a wide bulb holder/fitting?
|
Ken
Yes, I think that will be them.

Over here we can get Silver spray paint that dries like chrome, not the dull, aluminium look of other Silver paints. Steel wool to clean the old reflector up and a quick squirt.

Silver foil
Another good trick that works is that cooking foil supermarkets sell . Glue it on the reflector as evenly as you can with minimal wrinkles . It works great but with higher wattage globes there might be a heat problem with it . Use heat resistant glue and it will work a treat

Iv,e been following this post with interest as I,m not far from this stage. Is there some reason why standard off the shelf 6 volt headlamps will not fit?

Check out some of the HOT ROD parts suppliers
Hi
Couple of thoughts, one I have found a bulb supplier who can provide halogen replacement bulbs for the replaceable bulb type unit. They work quite well. Though I have not bought and yet it appears that some of the HOT ROD particularly Ford part suppliers have replacement reflectors and lenses for this period that look like a match. Yes I to have some of the original semi sealed bulbs and like the look of the lenses, so I have thought about trying to find a reflector and and replacement bulb that could use the lenses. Headlights
The headlight problem is one that bugged me for a long time. I have always been on the lookout for 7" semi-sealed beams that had provision for a parking light bulb so as to eliminate the need to fit extra lights on the front of the vehicle. I have quite a number that I have aquired over the years but none that are without fault.
I chanced across a company based in South Australia that goes by the name of Classic and Vintage Bulbs and they had exactly what I was after plus a huge range of other items. They were not cheap but I was happy to get them. Newly made, 6v halogen bulbs, perfect. Web site is/was? WWW.classicandvintagebulbs.com If replating a headlight reflector they really need to be done in silver as they were originally. Nothing else works as well and we need all the help we can get as it's not only the vehicles that suffer from advancing age. David |
Re-silvering headlight reflectors
I looked into having my headlight reflectors re-silvered, but the cost was very excessive. I have long since deleted the emails but vaguely recall $$$ in excessive of $150 EACH!
I bought two new reflectors from macsauto.com in USA, but they are slightly incorrect size for the glass. It may have been my fault though, as it was early days in my Blitz restoration learning. I do like the options put here though. Good food for thought. |
