Chevrolet C8A-HUP?

5 Attachment(s)
Guys,
Came across this CMP recently while hunting down ghost stories. Is it a C8A-HUP? As well, does anyone know what the numbers represent on the door?
Thanks!

It's probably a "HUW', or the wireless version of the HUP. The rear of the cab is the metal partition that was used in HUW's and not HUP's. Where is it located? The door number looks odd (for someone of limited experience like me). If in Canada early numbers (the vehicle dates from 1942) would be a 'unit' (then a line under it), z (for truck, and another line) then a 5 digit serial. From 1942 onwards numbers (in Canada) were two numbers/dot/three more numbers.

Could the data plates from that truck be had? I know a worthy restoration that would benefit greatly from them.

HUW Data Plates

Bruce,

Thank you for the information. The HUW designation would explain the square frame that remains on the rear chassis and the square window at the back of the cab. With regards to the data plate, let me see what I can do. I will try and get a better picture of the door numbers.

Regards, Richard

Interestink.....

Nov. 3rd 1942...... an early model with the rectangular hatch....

Passenger side door has the cab 13 canvass window brackets...... could the doors have been transplanted.

If you go back... see if you can take pictures of the rear frame section...

Wait until Rob see that posting....

Guys,

Here is a couple of more pictures of the HUW. I have purchased the HUW and it will be delivered to my shop early in 2012. Let me know if I can help with other HUW restorations.

Regards, Richard

Bob & Bruce,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this GMC a HUW also? I apologize for the quality of the pictures. I can probably get better information shortly.
Regards, Richard

It is one of the Heavy Utility series, whether HUA, HUW, HUP or Machinery Z (Light) I am not sure. The photo looks like there might be a fold down flap on the left side that might help to decide which sub-type it is. Anything you can add about the interior fittings will also help to sort it out.

100% it's a wireless, and a 1944 version with the recess for the spare tire on the right. It is up for grabs too, or even the data plates? It's a long, complicated story, but those plates, rather than the 1942 plates earlier in this thread would make two HUW owners VERY happy, not to mention two trucks that could display their correct data.

Does this HUW have anything left on the inside?

HUW not available

Bruce, I checked with the owner of the late model HUW and he isn't willing to part with it. He said that I could take better pictures next time I am by. I will keep an eye on it but it might be another couple of years....

Plate

I know of two others that were evidently supplied to L.V.309:

2844515417 ENGINE # FR3,852,704 NOVEMBER 4 1942
2844515470 ENGINE # FR3,866,568 L.V. 309 NOVEMBER 17 1942

Note the assembly dates differences.

for the # collectors

Richard, thanks for posting the data plate information on your new HUW. David, including Richard's latest
addition, I know of the following HUW numbers on Contract LV309:

serial # 2844515193 MFG date July 17, 42 engine # FR3838743 owned by an MLU Forum member (Canada)
serial # 2844515234 MFG date Aug 14, 42 engine # FR3838709 Ontario Regiment Museum (Ferret Club) Oshawa
serial # 2844515235 MFG date Aug 14, 42 engine # FR3838715 scrapped in 2010 - was in an Ontario wrecking yard and regrettably got no buyer
serial # 2844515409 MFG date Nov 3, 42 engine # FR3852715 owned by Richard Hatkoski, Ontario
serial # 2844515417 MFG date Nov 4, 42 engine # FR3852704 vehicle scrapped in Ontario, data plates now on restored HUW in the Netherlands
serial # 2844515470 MFG date Nov 17, 42 engine # FR3866568 owned by an MLU Forum member (Canada)

Also I think serial # 2844515440 is an HUW owned a Forum member in British Columbia but I don't have any more info on it.
