Engine Cover Grill
Can anbody advise me as to what type of mesh the engine grill on my No2, Mk2 carreir should be made of.
When I bought it a new grill had been put on made out of sheet steel pressed out at an angle. About 3 years ago I saw a Carrier at the War and Peace show with a mesh mad out of flat steel which looked origanal. I have attached 2 photos, one of the existing grill on my carrier and one of some flat mesh i recently have got. Thanks Stephen |

Hi Stephen ,
Welcome to the forum, nice to see another MK2 in the UK. what date was yours built ? Is it a Birtish build or Canadian ? last question did you get it recently ? TTFN Shaun |
Hello Shaun
Canadian built with an acceptance date of 4th November 1944. Only had it for twenty years. And still finding out things all the time. Stephen |
Mine too is a Canadian MK2 from 1944. We could have twins? Only had mine for about 15-16 years

Stephen,
Thanks for that. My carrier is a Canadian MK2 No2 * built in November 1944 as well. Whats your vehicle numbers, it would be interesting to see how close they are. i once had 2 carriers and they were one day apart in production ( 33 vehicles apart ). Its just the spotter coming out in me TTFN Shaun |
Hello Shaun
Mine is T297042 whats yours. stephen |
No. 2 Mk. II* Engine Grill
The grill is retained in four sections of steel framework, folded over each edge of the mesh. The framework corners welded. The grommet is made of brass, the internal diameter measures 5/8 of an inch.
The outside framework measures 17-3/4 inches long by 16 inches wide. PM if you need more pics or details. This frame is from an April, 1944 Canadian No. 2 Mk. II* Carrier. |

Hello Michael
Thank you for the pictures, I take it that the mesh is flat on your cover. Stephen |
Guys
Just so you know, The earlier U.C ones were all brass or copper (frame and mesh) the mesh was a round woven wire.

Hello Shaun
I got my number from the top of the armour infront of the driver seat, where the acceptance marks are. There is the war dept No T297042, date and serial number 29562, a few after yours. Which number should be displayed on the side of the carrier. thanks stephen |
Thats a very handy piece of info, im going to work out my "T" number now. Thanks Steven
|
is yours not stamped on the armour
|
No the front armour had all been cut off, i had a set of Brit MK2 which i have fitted but even that was to badly corried to get any numbers. Are wagons are only 3 apart !!!!! bring it to W&P !!!!!!!
|
Shaun
I don't believe British built carriers had any serial numbers stamped into the hulls. They had a painted "T" number, and a riveted data plate on the right front guard. (which I believe would have been removed and bolted to any replacement guard)
If anyone has a Brit carrier with original numbers,on the hull please speak up. |

Hello Shaun
Back in 1991 I enquired at Bovington to see if they had any info on my carrier and David Fletcher came back with the only 2 bits of info they had regaurding the order. One dated 30/5/1944 shows contract AID-GB-213 for carriers and windsors totalling 5870 with the WD numbers. The other sheet gives a list of WD numbers allocated to different types of vehicle and who the order was placed with. Mr Feltcher said that the records for which unit each carrier was sent to do not exist any more and have no way of knowing where the went. The photo copys of thes forms are not very good but may be of intrest to you. Stephen |

is the cover from a mk1 the same? i needs some pics of it,because we don,t have it for our mk1 carrier. |
Hello Roy.
The Mk1 gill is different but I am sorry I do not have any details. If I fine any I will let you know. Stephen |
the grille on my 1942 Canadian Mk1 is square holed round wire it does not have any cut out or access hole....whether it is original or not I don't know, but it certainly looks as it should.

Stephen, that cut out is for the hull drainage valve control rod.

No Jordan. The hull drain is through another purpose made round hole. I've also often wondered what the square hole is for. I need to remove my Bren tripod and get directly over it and see what it might line up with, say on the gearbox??? Ron

nice pics, look a bit strange to me,but now i know why,i was looking for the grill in front of the radiator

Did I read somewhere they are made of brass and copper to help with radio suppression?
I think only the later carriers had the water drain handle up the top, not MkI universals, which I think this grill is off (TL12123) Has anyone got a spare handle like the one on Richard's engine cover? |
Lynn, that one is identical to mine, is the surround brass or steel on yours ?
