First picture shows Chevrolets, 2nd and 3rd are 3-ton CMP trucks.

The top photo looks as though they were 1939-40 Models acquired from General Motors Near East Limited in Alexandria. Also, L 39000 to 39515 to Contract V 3352 was for LORRY 30 CWT. 4 X 2 GS/WATER TANKERS, 266 UNITS GS AND 84 WATER
133-INCH WHEELBASE FOR EGYPT. G/S trucks could easily have been converted to Portees in Alexandria. These were 1940 Model WA chassis.

2pdr Portees in use to 1943
 

Contrary to popular belief the 2 pdr Portee did not go out of use in British Army service in North Africa, as I have read on several occasions. In fact it soldiered on until at least 1943, as IWM photo NA4467, shows such a vehicle in Sicily in July 1943. The marking on the portee are not visible but I understand that the 50th (Northumbrian) Division used such vehicles in Sicily.

219 2-pounder Chevrolet and Morris-Commercial portees were donated to New Zealand in 1944, others were converted to G/S style 17-pounder tractors. However at least some of the later C60S 6-pounder portees with # 43 cab were converted to G/S trucks. REBUILD # H 4594682 WAS A C.-G.T. A/T TRACTOR: IWM PHOTO NA 19787


The M-C 2-pounder portees were converted in late 1943 by MCC to tractors, some being airportable, along with the Predictors for instance.

Could it be that the second picture.... based on the outline and rigid appearance of the windshield/windscreen be a cab 11...

... if this is so than Phil Waterman will be burning his eyes with a magnifying glass trying to see the details for his cab 12... potential portee....

Just for the record in my reply, above, I meant to say that the CMP 2 pdr portee actually soldiered on as a AT PORTEE still equipped with a 2 pdr AT gun in Sicily & Italy in 1943, which the history books have not picked up on!

Fantastic pictures..... that 2 pdr is a sweet set up....although I hate those two carriage wheels hanging out back of the truck.

There is no reason Phil can't rebuild his C60 Cab 12 to look like that... BUT... where do you find the 2 pounder????

I recently found this photo showing a CMP 2 pdr AT portee in Sicily, in use by the AT Coy of the 5th Bn East Yorks Regt, 69th Bde, 50th Infantry Division. The photo was taken in Catania in August 1943 and confirms that the 2 pdr and its Portee was in use a little longer than many references would have us believe!

I wonder if the 50th Div took these Portees to Italy and what happened to them after the Div was withdrawn to the UK in early 1944.

Note the unit serial 60 and TT Div sign on the mudguard.

Suggestion?
 

I wonder if those withdrawn back to the UK were included in those sold to New Zealand? Were they rebuilt when they were shipped back as G/S trucks and 17-Pounder Tractors?
