Just got my first ever Jeep. Looking for help on the details of what I have. Here's what I know from the data plate. M38A1CDN2, Mfr. Ser. No. 96984, MFR. MODEL MD, Date DEL. JAN 68, Contract NO. 2MK7-7, Inspected JAN 68. The fender data plate also reads Jeep SER. 7105 96984 C. Found a overhaul date on the block from 1982. The last time it ran was about 5 yrs ago. The engine turns over by hand. ( No battery ) Plan to restore from the frame up. Any help would be great. Thanks Mike

Mike
Your Canadian Forces Registration number would have been 07937. This would have initially been stencilled under the door openings, but later it would have been on a Canadian Forces license plate front and rear. If you go to the CFR thread on this forum, one of the guys with access to the EDR viewer may be able to look up the unit history etc for your vehicle.

Seems like that one got pretty far away from home. Any idea how it found it's way to Florida?

Thanks Rob, I'll have to ask my buddy his dad had owed this for about 15 yrs. One more thing i read somewhere you could find out if the engine was # matching to the jeep by looking on the water pump? If so I've seen so far on the front of the pump was a 96 stamped on it. I'll have to look more but I've only have had this for 2 days now and it's been raining like crazy here. Mike

Okay wait a second...um did you say rain?
I thought we in vancouver canada only got days of rain?
Lots of info on line here in the forums and Rob is a wealth of info as well.
Since you are in the states already there are great places for parts in New York and Minisota California etc. 24 volt sytem as well two batteries so be careful when wiring them up.
Have funa maybe post a few pics for us to see...?
Let us know how it goes!

Your engine will not be numbers matching if it has a rebuild tag from 82. Going by memory but I think it was Bennet and Hanson or else Western rebuilders doing the engine rebuilds for the DND back then. When a Jeep needed a new engine, you ordered it, a big wooden crate showed up with an engine complete with water pump, belts, alternator, clutch, carb etc. You installed the new engine, and put the old one in the crate and off it went.

There is a flat boss on the engine block just back of the water pump. There may (or may not) be numbers on there. We had NOS bare blocks available, and when the rebuilder or 202 workshop used these, no numbers would be on the boss. As well, early 1952 engines were mixed into the fray due to the overlap of the jeep fleets in service, so you can also end up with very early numbers.

Your 68 vintage jeep will have a few differences from the typical M38A1s that are in the US. These include such improvements as the rubber shell connectors, 60 amp alternator, battery voltage gauge, no hinges on front grill, no fender support to the frame, center support for the grill, factory turn signals (almost always upgraded to the solid state signal kit), late style aircleaner, closed type shackles.....the list goes on. Your Jeep would have been assembled in Windsor Ontario, as opposed to Toledo Ohio, where the US Jeeps were assembled.

Rob, is it not odd that heh as a 68 CDN2 tag and a 71xxx tub tag?
I thought the 70 or 71 tub tag was only applicable to CDN3 versions.

Hi Micheal , one of the points I think Rob is trying to get across is do your research and make sure you have the Canadian books , you also should take your time on stripping the paint at certain locations of your vehicle before sandblasting anything, take photos of everthing and post some here if you have questions , the vehicle will give you it's history under the different layers of paint , you also have a few different radio sets that you can install, although not all had them installed and remember it's different than a US 38A1,hope all this helps,
regards Frank

Michael Giunta 15-05-12 16:06

Thanks Frank will do. Today I found under the paint on the glove box door the numbers 67 07937. These are the same as Rob said it was reg, as. Thanks everyone. I will post pictures and keep everyone up to date as I restore it.

you also have a few options on paint such as semi-gloss OD , OD or white for UN, or camo , does yours have a macine gun mount on the pass side? , I know I sold one to someone in FL about 15-20 years ago , all this depends if you want to stick to the unit that held the vehicle or do something else,
regards Frank

Michael Giunta 16-05-12 00:26

It's funny you would point out the paint. I have found the base coat is a dark semi gloss OD green then what I couldn't figure out why it was painted all white and over that was a camouflage paint. Now I know the white was probably UN.

The 7105 tag seems is applicable to the Cdn2. I did not give his date (67 or 68) on the CFR because it seems to be right on the border of where the years changed. Judging by his dash, it is a 67.

Have a look at the M38A1s on ramtank.ca for comparative serial numbers.

Steve, Thank you this is great. I love knowing the history of things. This will help when I get to the paint job so I can put the correct markings on it. Thanks again, best regards, Mike

Michael Giunta 18-05-12 16:26

Hey, Frank when you say a gun mount do you mean on the dash? If so there is a mount on the passenger side by the grab bar. Not sure but it looks as if you would snap in the top stock of a gun in to it as to hold it in place.

chris vickery 18-05-12 20:15

Michael, look on the passenger side sheetmetal at the front of the door frame.
You may see 6 or 8 holes drilled there. This was for a gpmg mount made at base workshops, typical for reserve units mounting the Browning 1919.
