10 HP Tillies in RAF
1 Attachment(s)
According to some modellers websites (reviewing the Tamiya 1/35 scale kit) the Austin 10 HP Tilly was never used by the RAF.
Is this true? If so can anyone identify the Tilly in the photo, which I thought looked more like an Austin than a Hillman. |

Hi Larry:
I can be wrong, I often am nowadays but I tend to agree with Richard on this one. The Austin had 3 very distinctive vertical louvers in the side of the motor hood and the Hillman had sort of a wedge shaped single louver panel which was slanted at the rear. Sadly, your photo has a winter mask over the radiator/grille so we cannot see that part but even though I could not get my photo edit program to give me a better look at the motor hood, I feel pretty strongly that I see the wedge shaped panel with the slant behind the blackout lamp. Hi Bill,
I was going by the upper part of the cab, as you say, the radiator muff hides grille details. A friend has a large print of this picture in his home and we often remark about it. regards, Richard |
RAF Tillies
And as a postscript - it is presumably true that the Austin 10 HP was for the Army and not the RAF?
