Dead spot on starting

I have had on 4 occasions over the last 10 years, twice in the last month, not been able to start the carrier without turning the engine over first with the starting handle.
You pull the starter lever and absolutely nothing happens at all, but turn the engine a half turn with the starting handle and then no problems.
Any ideas, or should I scrap the carrier?
Thanks Stephn

Sounds a bit like the starter rushes are getting worn, or that your armiture needs attention.. when they are worn it is possible that the starter will stop with the brushes over the most worn spot.. So by moving the engine with the starter handle the brushes then come back into contact with the armiture.

I thought that at first, but would truning the engine over move the starter round as I thought they only engaged when the starter is pulled.
Thanks stephen.

Stephen

Check your battery leads, solenoid connections. I think turning it over is nothing to do with it.
Get someone to try to start it, and wriggle things while thats happening.

Thanks lads well have a play around.

Your Engine may be stuck in compression when it will not start. Turning over a flathead by hand will take it out of compression.

with any luck noting too bad then.

you also could have a dead spot on the armature

stephen crowhurst 06-08-12 21:23

Thanks Stew.
Will have a play around as soon as I get a chance.

I am tending to agree that the starter is suspect, and it doesnt like the high compression area of the rotation. Good luck

Starter not working

Hi
Check to see if the bolts that hold the starter are good and secure.

The grounding of the starter is through these bolts.

Thanks for all you suggestions.
Off tomorrow so will have a good look.

Personally i think you should scrap the carrier and give it to your brother.................. who has'nt got one!!!!!! :salute:

stephen crowhurst 18-08-12 17:26

Dead spot on Starter

Hello Stephen, we had the same problem, and we had the bendix replaced and it solved the case,
Gilles

stephen crowhurst 20-08-12 23:30

Thanks for that Gilles. Have still found nothing wrong so will have a look at that. Thanks once again.. Stephen

Stew Robertson 21-08-12 00:36

Stephen have you checked out the armature winding to see if the is a dead zone in it . :teach: use a shunt tester to do the job

Hi Stephen,
I know a good electrician near Maidstone who overhauls my starters and dynamos, etc. He does a lot of work on old vehicles. If you want his name send me a PM.
regards, Richard

It is Ron, he is listed in Milweb trade directory. He has been involved with military vehicles and their electrics for many years and gives good results on anything I take to him.
