CC60L Chevrolet Modified Conventional Trucks
 

I am looking for photos of the Chevrolet CC60L Modified Conventional truck. I am mainly looking for pics of the 3-ton version with GS steel body. Also, does anyone know if these trucks were built as tractor units for towing trailers. Any, help or pics would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

As far as I know, these trucks were not built as tractor units, but I'm sure our resident GM Automotive Historian David H. can answer that.

There is a photo of the front of three trucks in the latest June issue of HERITAGE COMMERCIALS magazine, in an article written by yours truly! These were to contract S/M 2006 for 1941 Model CC60L G/S trucks, 1941 Model 1543x2. There were three varieties, all model 1543 but x1, x2 and x3:
160" w.b. x1 = DUAL REAR CIVILIAN WHEELS; x2 = SINGLE REAR MILITARY WHEELS; x3 = DUAL REAR CIVILIAN STYLE WHEELS.

I know of 1941, 1942 and 1945 Models, and some were demobbed and sold on the civilian market from say 1947 onwards.

There may be some official shots in the Imperial War Museum Kidbrooke series, as I know that there are some Ford 4 x 2 G/S trucks in there.

So far as I know there were no tractor conversions as they were 160 inch wheelbase, although it seems that there were a few GMC 1940 Model chassis converted. The job was taken up by either the few British order F60T Ford tractor+trailer combos, converted Fordson tugs, or Bedford-Scammell tractors. However, who knows what may have been the case elsewhere?

1939 & 1940 MODELS
 

The 1939 & 1940 Model trucks [second and first respectively?] are possibly in the batch that were acquired direct from GM Near East, Alexandria and then issued to British forces..and then to AIF, NZEF, IA? They may therefore be US-sourced and not Canadian 1543 models.

The battered one looks like a CC60L at frst glance.

You are correct, of course, in pointing out that only one, maybe two are CC60L vehicles. I should have mentioned it myself.
Incidentally, the last pic is an NEI vehicle.
I am sure you have read of my software/hardware problems in my exchanges with Hanno. I just get excited when the planets are all aligned properly and my PC decides to send pics out properly. In this case, I just decided to send a batch of somewhat similar vehicles because the pics were rather interesting and at least they were Chevs and my machinery was working:p

I will try to remember to ID stuff in the future.

...these photos are all of interest especially to me...now I know / am reminded that they exist. I assumed that the wrecker was a 1940 WB, but it could just be a 'CC60L' albeit 1940 Model rather than the later 1941 Models to S/M 2006! You may therefore be right, since there were indeed a quantity of 1940 Model 1543 trucks acquired for civilian service we know...S/M 2005 consisted of 4,787 trucks of which 3,150 were sent to Egypt, of which again there were 50 Wreckers! I am conjecting therefore that the photo is one of these issued to the AIF in Egypt and thus the very first CC60L!

Bill, your pic of Ford tanker trucks is interesting. Are they the same sort of trucks as the one I posted on the MH thread?
I assume the scene is Australian. Were the truck Australian produced as well, you think?

the first one is a Chev and yes they were made in Australia in Army workshops for bulk dilivery of Petrol.

Attached is a pic of a 1/35 scale model I am doing of the chev 3 ton version.:)

I do not know about Chevs but I have been told that Dodge D60l's were used as tractor units in Australia.:)

the only information I have on the fuel trucks is from the AWM. 5 were built by the 125th General Transport Company and the pics (3 off) of the Chevrolet tanker were taken in August 1944 in North Queensland Australia.

But as they are 1941 model trucks I would say you are right in saying a production year of 1941/42.
