Ford CMP at Reynolds

I was in at Reyolds museum on the weekend to buy a few parts as they are selling off all the odds and ends and found a CMP that is rather odd in that it is left hand drive Ford, with exterior steering box, engine side covers that fold and lift up, odd dash and no engine cover inside the cab, 2 wheel drive with 16 tires. anyone have any idea on the year or model looks like pre 11 or 12 cab.

Yeo.NT 12-10-12 04:30

I do believe this is a CMP prototype

It looks like one of the late 39 (1940 model year) pilot trucks to me. I was working on the one in Shilo......hopefully I'll be back on it in the new year.

Any idea what the asking price was on this one at Reynolds?

Keith Webb 12-10-12 06:50

Wow...

Amazing to see one of the pilot Fords so unmolested and crying out to be saved!

Hanno Spoelstra 12-10-12 06:58

See Gregg's Blueprint for Victory page 18 - this is the Ford 1939 prototype III, the last prototype model prior to the adoption of RH drive and the standardized Cab 11.

This is truly an amazing find and I am surprised no one mentioned it earlier. Someone should notify the CWM, methinks....

That one wasn't there a couple of years ago.

You can see its ancestory coming from the Morris Commercial CS8

Yeah....the ugly cousin of the Morris! Thank god development didn't end with this prototype:D

aj.lec 12-10-12 10:57

Definately got Morris and possibly scammell blood in there
I quite like the look
Hopefully it will be picked up by the right hands ,restored and displayed.
A significant piece of CMP history :salute:

If you follow the link to the earlier thread provided by Yeo.NT, one will read this is possibly the fourth survivor:

Here are the Ford limited production types. It has been estimated that 6 or 8 were made. Three of these survive.
1. Dr. Bill Gregg's restored, went to the RCA Musuem in CFB Shilo in 1985 (I did the appraisal). I have photos but none on my web site yet.
2. Gary Moonie has one, partly restored in BC. Old photo from Blueprint For Victory.
3. The Canadian War Museum has one partial one (cab and cowl) in Ottawa. Found by Jim Fraser of Arnprior in the CFB Petawawa area apparently.

Hi Hanno,
Looks like the only way you could drive that would be to relocate the clutch pedal to the cab step !

Well, you know Richard, where there's a will....

Being LHD makes it easier to drive as well!

Clive,

Bill and I only had little over half an hour before the caretaker had to leave so I could not spend too much time. Not knowing if and where it could have a serial number did not help either. But there's a number stenciled on the dash. I took pictures of all the data plates I saw on the other CMPs. Once I get home I will sort the pictures and post them here.

The serial number on the one here in Shilo was on top of the frame over the left front wheel.
