Thanks in advance

Do you mean the steering column with the steering gear at the bottom?

Steering

And it will help to say whether it's the '375' or '400' type you're after.

Steering gears

Sounds like an easy question about steering gear but a review of the (rare) Ford Master Assembly parts book shows a wide range of steering gears used on Ford CMP's. I don't have hand-on experience with these steering gears but do have a spare NOS C111QF 3503 steering gear, apparently for Gun Tractor model. F60L trucks use 11QF-3503A, C29QF-3503 and C01QF-3503 depending on motor serial numbers etc.
Perhaps someone can explain just how interchangeable steering gears in actual practice.

Thank you..those are all excellent questions..so far i havnt been able to find threads relating to the identification of the 375 vs. 400 gears.
So if anyone can point me in the right direction for an education that would be great.Maybe post some pics, numbers and where to find them and specs.
Secondly, yes a complete column/gear assembly would be the ticket i think.unless they can be separated (again i'm lacking solid technical info here)
In which case just the lower half would do fine.

thank you all very much for your input.

cheers

Corey

Difference

The 375 box has the oil filler on an angle to the right of the top and the 400 type, which is a larger steering box has the filler right on top. These were introduced in 1944 and the vehicles also had the 6" steering ends.

excellent thank you.ill investigate as soon as i go off shift.will advise..

Corey Myronuk 21-11-12 05:41

looks like its a 400 style box..filler is straight up ,centre of the housing.

thanks for the tech.

i hope someone has a spare they can let go.

Cheers

Corey

Interchangeability?

A question remains: are the Ford early and late styles interchangeable? Was it simply a change to a better design?
A review of the Chev Major Assembly books shows a similar wide variation in steering gears: often attributed to whether the truck was "arcticized" or not. Were some of these changes due to clearance problems with specialized equipment? Often the chang seemed to be as simple as a variation in the length of the pitman arm shaft.

my truck may have been updated or had a transmission swap at some point in its life.it was previously owned by roberts creek fire dept and it looks like they spent a lot of time doing mechanical work to it.it lookks to me like the flanges are the 6inch diameter ones but the truck is registered as a 1942 model by the trans vin stamp.all my data plates were missing.

Theres another F60L for sale in the latest Western Command Newsletter. Parts?

Not directly as the type 400 has a much larger mounting bracket. I have seen some rather bodgy examples of welded brackets used, hardly safe!
