PUROL oil filter
3 Attachment(s)
some kind of oil filter unit ?
|
Definitely an oil filter. Purolator is the modern name, at some point Pur-ol- lator was the spelling (as in pure oil later). Some of their older elements aren't easy to find, for example I haven't found the element to fit an original kit for the Chev 216.

Can you post a picture of what you have Grant
Hi Mike and Grant
Mike the filters shown in your three photos all look to be very similar if not identical to standard off the shelf civilian oil filters. Which in most cases I have encountered you can find a modern civilian filter unit that will fit. You just need a good master filter catalog that gives dimensions and specifications. Word of caution though the old design filter were a fairly gross filter which were trying to take out the big stuff and trap condensation. As they got loaded up with dirt they would pass less and less oil until no oil was passing through the filter. Both the Chevy 6 and Ford V8 shown I believe were bypass filters not full flow filters as used on later engines. Many modern spin on filters actually have a pressure bypass built into the filters to keep oil flowing if the filter is plugged. Grant can you post a picture of the filter body you have, maybe if I can match it I can give you a modern number. Cheers Phil |

In a original oil filter set up for a chevy 216 I got from a fellow forum member the filter element inside was a AC P-117. These are available on Ebay. Hope this helps. Svenn |
If the housing on the Ford V8 is a standard quartermaster housing, then the WWII Jeep or Dodge filter element would be the same.
Yes these are bypass filters. Basically, through a restrictor, about 10 percent of the oil from the pump diverts off through the filter, and then, directly back to the sump . The element is usually finer than a full flow filter element. Most filtering systems of the WWII era were bypass systems. As is commonly known, the Jeep system, was not the best. |
