ex-portee GS trucks?
I understand that in 1943 the 6pdr Portee, based mainly on the F60L 158" wheelbase chassis, was deemed obsolete and many were converted to GS trucks. Would this conversion have been carried out in depots in North Africa? Where would the resilting trucks have been used?
My guess would be that they would not have shipped the trucks all the way home for conversion and their main use would therefore have been N.Africa/Sicily/Italy. Anyone confirm this, and even better know of any units issed with these trucks? Info required for a model. |
Have photo!
Dave I have an IWM photo:
L 5216042 to 5216554 Contract SM 2613 LORRY 3 TON 4 X 4 A/TK PORTEE # 43 CAB: 1942 MODELS BUT THEN REBUILT TO GS BODIES AS OBSOLETE E.G. L 5216493 IWM PHOTO KID 4052 These would have been converted in the UK, possibly by General Motors Limited in Bamber Bridge, near Preston I should imagine....I reckon conversion was in 1943 just as MCC Limited were contracted to convert MCC 2-pdr Portees and Predictors to A/tank tractors. |
Thank you David.
