Crank case breather - PCV
Hi. Removed my PCV - crank case ventilator valve. Is makes a rattle sound when I shake it... I is this correct or should there be a spring making it soundless?
And which way should the arrow on it point? Svenn |
Rattle is normal
Hi Svenn
There are two different types of PVC that I have encountered which I have reason to believe were original. Both of them are designed to be mounted vertical, there is no spring inside. Correct function is when you suck on the side toward the carb (top) and air comes through but when you try and blow back through it no air or very little passes through. In short a one way valve. Early type was mounted over on the breather side of the engine while the later type is mounted over on the manifold side. Arrow is the direction the air should flow or up in the normal mounting position. The none spring versions used on Chevy CMPs doesn't work if mounted other than vertical, some of the later PVC valves with springs don't really care which way is up. Cheers Phil |

Thanks Phil. Just not used to the rattle sound on the ones on the PCV on jeeps. Took it apart and a picture in the manual. Seems complete and ok.

Has anyone got spares of them (as Svenn has pictured) Ford or Dodge or Jeep

Hi All
Thought I had just seen this type of PVC and I was correct in the last Military Vehicle Magazine, Midwest Military has them in their ad. Hope this helps. Cheers Phil |
The one midwest has must be the one which can be fitted horisontally. On jeeps it is mounted like that.
