Possible Bren Carrier Engine?

4 Attachment(s)
Hello Guys,

I purchased this engine today. By all appearances, it looks very similar to the engine shown in Illustration No. 4 Engine Assembly Top View pg 18 of FUC-03.

I welcome comments and suggestions as I do not see any identification plates.

Regards, Richard

hi Richard

it's not from a bren as the manifolds are wrong and the pulley's are single not double belt but on the plus side it will fit a bren carrier no problem if you change the manifolds or alter your downpipes.

looking at that distributor I would say it came out of a truck.

Lynn Eades 14-09-13 15:15

The distributor is a 46 to 48 model. it can be changed as can all the other things.
The one telling thing that says it has never been a carrier engine, is that the other hole at the rear for the oil cooler has never been drilled.
It might be a postwar American built motor.
If it is in good nick inside or rebuildable it can work in a carrier.

I think all the truck ones had double pulleys.

I think the double pulley was referred to as "commercial" as opposed to being a truck thing. I have seen numerous 1/2 tons with single pulley.

The distributor is original and matches the '59' cast in the bell housing and the heads that I can see which makes it a 46-48 manufactured model as Lynn mentioned.

Ford Flathead 8 Specifications

Guys,

Thank you for all of your comments and suggestions. The previous owner told me that he had purchased is separately from the carrier and he couldn't tell me where it came from originally.

I would concur the 46-48 vintage as per Lynn and AJ's comments. As soon as I get it into the shop, I will look to see if there is other casting information available. This would also make for a good engine for one of the Ford CMP trucks. I would then switch the discussion to the proper forum.

Rich, i've been working on my bren for 15 years and mine came from an old hunt camp near Burks falls. mine is at the cottage near Sprucedale. Maybe we can help each other out a bit. I see you got a long way to go, mine may be driving in a few weeks.

South of North Bay Bren Carriers

Murray,

Thanks for your post. I have sent you a PM. Would like to drop by and see your carrier - whatever we can do to help each other out - would be a pleasure.

It would be fun next summer to get the carriers out and tear up some dirt. I've heard that they go through the snow but I'm not into that.

Cheers, Richard
