Flathead tested ready to fit

Gents,

Had the flathead on the test bed, just need to clean it up and paint, this should see off most carrier rivals on the arena circuit, might even get a 17 pounder on the towe hook.

Yeeeeeeeer.......... :)

hrpearce 17-09-13 21:07

Interesting, is there much difference in size and are there many mods needed to fit it.

Richard Farrant 17-09-13 21:13

That would be a Lincoln then ...

Lauren Child 17-09-13 21:18

Good grief - that must absolutely roar!

Hans Mulder 17-09-13 22:35

Carrier drag races coming soon?

Marc van Aalderen 17-09-13 22:37

Kevin,

Be careful now! You will have track spin taking off! :D :D

RichardT10829 17-09-13 23:16

My supercharged unit will keep up, just you wait ;)

Richard Farrant 17-09-13 23:45

Next there will be a shortage of Ford halfshafts ;)

eddy8men 18-09-13 17:54

I like your style mate

Lynn Eades 18-09-13 22:08

Kevin, If you can't get it to fit, a Viper motor might be a little shorter? :D

Andy Mitchell 19-09-13 14:46

v12

Just add wings and you will have a truly Airborne carrier !

kevin powles 22-09-13 15:18

Robert, It's not actually my engine, but what an engine upgrade it would be, I need to measure engine mount locations and length back from the gearbox position, apparently the carrier box will bolt straight on. The idea would be to check this engine would not foul the division plate with the radiator removed. With a carrier wooden blanking plate in it's normal position and a radiator located further back maybe above the engine with an electric cooling fan. All engine covers in place it would look like a standard carrier.

Just an idea as it would still sound like a flathead (part of the carrier appeal!)

kev.

Lincoln V12 sound

It does sound like a flathead because it is one, but rather than V8 it sounds like a lumpy V12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0jmXgBChes

Kevin, If your serious, A 350 Chev with an auto would be much cheaper, would fit in better (length wise) rev nearly twice as high, and shag your track gear really fast
The V12 Ford is expensive to rebuild (btw,it has smaller bores than the v8) But they do look nice.

Hans Mulder 24-09-13 19:50

I have a Chev smallblock in the Frankencarrier, with a 4 speed. It is actually about 4 inches longer than the original package. On the frankencarrier, the "division plate" has been moved forwards to make space and the glacis plate cut to make room for the seat and driver, probably why the carrier also was converted to tiller bars. The power is nice to have, but the flathead sound is missing. I'm thinking I might replace it with a straight-6 down the road.

Stew Robertson 26-09-13 03:03

What's all this crap about trying to put a chov in a FORD put Ford part in a Ford and keep your Chev. crap were it belongs
install a good 302 fuel injected or a 351 in they fit excellent and you don't have to worry about not having enough power! :)

Hans Mulder 27-09-13 00:18

Somebody is touchy... Have you been to a hotrod show lately and noticed all the Chevy smallblocks in the Fords? I think we can all agree that although the Ford flathead v8 is a neat engine, it isn't the best engine out there...

chris vickery 27-09-13 00:29

What makes a flatty cool is its uniqueness.
There is nothing better than seeing a hopped up flathead with a 3 duece intake in a nice roadster streetrod...
Blue Oval Forever!

Stew Robertson 30-09-13 03:49

:DFORDS go CHEVS blow!

chris vickery 30-09-13 03:58

I believe the only reason so many guys use small block Chev motors in anything is the fact they are plentiful and cheap...
Plus the fact that too many guys don't have enough imagination or creativity to use anything else.
For me, "cool factor" is seeing unique combinations that no one else is doing.
:p
