Yankee Joe periscope

Euan McDonald took this pic recently showing a roof mounted periscope in this Chevrolet.
Could it be original?

Yes, it is original. These were fitted to Chev 1 1/2 ton 4x4's fitted with a Borer on the back. One of our club members has one of these Boring Chevs (Bit of an Oxymoron, that:D ) and the original manuals with it. The periscope enabled the driver to accurately reverse the truck to the spot where the hole was required to be drilled, in conjunction with the side mirrors.
Roley's truck is seen here below before the fitment of the Borer, which he has obtained from a second truck. You will note that even with the periscope, it can be hard to park between the lines in a car park. The building in the background is the Lithgow Small Arms Factory "Bren Section" building, a piece of WW2 history demolished last summer:(
Where is this truck, Keith/Euan? Roley is still after more Yankee Joe parts.

Ode to my Yankee Joe

Yankee Joe, Yankee Joe
My restoration doth go so slow
Shops in Aussie never heard of clutch head screws
Rusted parts make my hands bloodied and bruised
Need new cab, guards, bonnet, bed and floor
Chassis, wheels, engine, tyres, running boards and door
Molasses, electrolysis have dissolved my rust away
Not much left of my truck I have to say
Many late nights alone in my shed
Wife says need to have head read
Must keep motivated as December is my target
Now where does this thing go again, Oh Buggerit.

And if anyone can help me in my quest I am chasing a parts manual, spare tyre bracket, running boards, and logo side engine shields.

Is there any way to trace the history of my vehicle from the US rego W-326608. AWM were unable to help

Steve.

Hi guys, did we loose some replies ot this thread? I had one here and so did Geir Iversen.

Anyway, steve, check out www.vehiclesofvictory.com, you might have some luck there with the side panels. I also am sure i sure some repro ones for sale somewhere, i just cant remember- i thought it was in the MVPa's supply line but ive checked a fare few issues back and no luck... hmm!

Email me your details and i`ll ask Roley and another bloke Tom if they can help you out with some dimensions and so on for the tyre carrier. I dont know what it looks like so i dont know if it would be hard to make, but you could try!

As a side note, i believe there were only 8 of these borers to come into australia- based on what roley has said and also from what i have seen in the AWM ledgers.

Ian.

Yes Ian you are right, I also posted a reply to this tread that was lost.

Anyway Steve, as Ian suggested try www.vehiclesofvictory.com and go to "Parts For Sale", in the bottom of that one you will find a post from Richard Privat. He got a lot of used/take out parts for Chevy's and can probably help you with some of the parts you are looking for. I bought the frame parts for the winch and a winch for my Chevy from him.
For the clutch head screws you could try Jim Carters site http://oldchevytrucks.biz/p/1934_194...ge.php?page=t1 and search for clutch head. Then you should get up both the screws and the tools for them. He is concentrating on parts for the civilian Chevy's, but a lot of these go on the military versions as well.
Good luck with your project Steve.

The roof mounted periscope was also used on the Chevy 1 1/2 ton 4x4 Telephone maintenance truck K43.

Geir
