800 CDN2s, which number is mine

I understand that 800 CDN2s were built in 67-68. What was the starting and ending serial numbers, were they all in order? Given that the serial number of my 67 CDN2 is 7105 96879 and the CFR is 67-07832. Can it be figure out what number my jeep is in that total 800 built. Thanks

My money says yours is the 133rd Cdn2 if you go by CFRs, and around 37 if you go by the serial numbers.

If you go to Clive's ramtank.ca, he has listed all the CFRs and serial numbers of the M38A1Cdn2 and Cdn3. The Cdn 2s run from CFR 07700 to just under 08500. The serial numbers are in sequence for the most part, but appear to be in batches. Any small gaps in the serial numbers likely reflect disposal of that particular CFR prior to 1977 when the computerized records started.

http://ramtank.ca/m38a1%20index.htm

The lowest serial number listed in the Cdn2 batch is 96842 and the highest I spotted was 97765, for a difference of 923, so there is some large gaps in there somewhere.

M38a1cdn2 07832

From my records, your M38A1CDN2 ECC 121201 was surplused out of CFB Valcartier in Sept 1987.

The CFR list for M38A1CDN2s runs from 07700 to 08499. The serial numbers run in sequence, but only in batches. So your M38A1CDN2 is in a batch from CFR 07795 sn 7105-96842 to CFR 07959 sn 7105-97006.

I hope this helps.

Thanks to both of you for your answers. Ed, in your reply you list my CDN2 as ECC 121201, can you explain what that means, Thanks

121201 is the basic ECC for a Cdn2.

Or...

ECC...Equipment Classification Code.

Each variant has a different ECC. So the with winch is different from the ambulance from the ceremonial, etc. Delivered in 1967 in brackets.

121201 standard 1/4 ton (617)
121202 with winch (96)
121203 with ambulance kit (4)
121208 cable laying (4)
121209 cable laying (6)
121210 106mm RCL (10)

And just to complicate matters, there is a CDN3 (ECC 121301) showing in the delivered in 1967 data. Plus there is a blurring with a code for M151 vehicles in the 1967 data. No 1/4 trucks of any sort delivered in 1968.

Or Equipment configuration code, or equipment census code. I think they have changed that one a few times over the years......same great letters but slightly different meaning.

Many of the Cdn2 were made in 1968. I suspect the DND used the model or contract year in this case for the Cdn2 CFRs and delivery dates. I am going by recollection here, but will check some of my data plates to confirm.

I recall stripping a frame some 30 years ago and finding the date of Jan 1968 painted on the frame over the black base coat but under the olive green overcoat.

ECC Numbers

Currently ECC stands for Equipment Configuration Code. What you have to remember is that at times vehicles were stripped down to their basic configuration before they were surplused. You therefore get artificially low totals for some of the specialty configurations and overly high numbers for the basic configuration. As well, vehicles surplused in the 1970s are not included in these totals.

Wow thats a whole lot of info, sounds like DND wants to keep things confusing. But that can be said of any military. Some time back, I asked about if anyone had one of the correct CDN2 manufactors data plates, that was placed on the wheelwell behind the passenger's seat. Does anyone have one??

Do you want to make a copy or do you want to assume another vehicle's identify, sort of like, "Day of the Jackal"? I have one that came off a '67 hulk, but it is specific to that vehicle, regardless of condition.

Retsarge 06-01-14 05:33

I would like to try and make a copy of it and place my vehicles number on it. The one that you have from the hulk would be great to try and duplicate from. No day of the jackal here. Could you possibly send me that one? Thanks Rich
