More Carrier Wheels
 

We were pretty pleased with the set of four wheels that we got from Roy van Doorp last year, they have been fine on our engine trolley, so this year we bought another four outright (last year we exchanged the wheels) and I collected the new wheel set from Bert Marinus who had brought them over from Holland for us at a very competitive costs compared with a pallet carrier.

This set of wheels are wider than the last set we bought, 75mm tread width against 60mm for the first set, so we will probably transfer the first set onto the Ruston 1YB Engine Trolley and this new set onto the Ruston 1ZHR which is a heavier setup, not by much but enough to make it worth doing.

As they have rusted a bit after their shotblasting prior to the new tyres being moulded, I'll get them done again plus Zinc spray as usual.

Should get them back before Xmas.

Did you end up with wheels for the Windsor carrier?
Any casting marks on them showing the manufacturer and dates?

The first batch which we exchanged had 'FMC 44' cast in them, which we took to be Ford Motor Company 1944.

I haven't had a detailed look at the current batch, will do tomorrow and post back what is on them (It's dark and p*ssing down with rain outside!)

We currently have three sets of four, our very first set, on the Ruston 1YB with strip rubber for tyres, the set we exchanged after buying four more last year, they are on the 1ZHR horizontal diesel and the new set which is at the shotblasters this week, pictures above.

this wheels are the ones you bring over to me a few months ago peter,so you have back your own wheels right now.
because we have enough moulded wheels at the time,we can sell a complete set for the universal carrier,this are the 6 road wheels and the 2 19 inch diameter front wheels.

Thanks, Roy, these we bought off a guy in Brixsworth, he had some up for sale on ebay, that was February this year. They subsequently found there way over to you.

So we have two 'wide' sets and one narrow set.

The first set were wide and had FMC 44 cast on the back of the spokes.

The narrow set I haven'[t looked at yeat, but will do later this morning.

When you guys say Windsor, don't forget the wide wheels started out on the Vickers light tanks.

Sorry for the delay, just got the wheels back from being shot blasted and zinc sprayed. There was a lot of Zinc overspray, but it scrapes off the rubber OK.

That is great Peter. I suppose with the 1944 Ford Motor Company marking and extra width those wheels would have been manufactured for the second series Ford Canada produced Windsor Carrier.

I'm not heavily into Carriers, but the next wheel I started to clean up had the same markings, even the date, so they must have been knocking these out in some volume.

Peter, I would not assume that the date was changed on a daily basis, rather that it was the date that the mould pattern was made/ finished/ commissioned.

On a lot of our engines, castings are dated daily or weekly, not unusual in those days, less so now.

A lot of stationary engines date back pre-WW1.

I'll check the others and see what's on them as well.

All seem fairly late in the war as well, probably why they survived scrapping etc.
