M38a1 wheels
 

Does anyone have a picture of the correct wheel style for a 1967 M38A1cdn2? Mine is a mix and match that I would assume has come from trailers and M151's through the years.
Are they made by Kelsey-Hayes and stamped K.H.?
Do they have the same 1/8 drilled hole beside one of the mounting holes as the US jeeps?

Good question. Mine are a variety of styles too. (And I thought I was just being obsessive about the details.) The M151A2 has a very distinct hole pattern unlike the M38A1.

M151A2 rims will not go onto a M38A1 without having the centers cut out. As well, the holes are not tapered.

With the overlap of Jeep and trailer fleets in CF use over the years, you could almost find any vintage of rims in use. Towards the end, if we ordered a Jeep rim, we ended up with some kind of a heavy duty rim that almost looked like it belonged on a forklift.

There are obviously 3 patterns for wheel. I believe the 1950s ones have a small hole in the rim approx 1/8" diameter near the raised center.
The CDN3 has definative weld lumps near the center. I cannot remember off hand what the CDN2 rim has that makes it stand out.
I have some of each, when I am back home maybe I can get some pics to demonstrate the differences.

I am at a conference for work at present but when I return home I'll snap some pictures. Perhaps we can figure out some sort of trade .

On My 52 M38CDN the original rims 3 have the small 1/8 hole, 2 are stamped Kelsy Hayes all had the valve stem line up with a lug nut and all had riveted centers.

on my 1953 M38A1CDN all were stamped Kelsey Hayes, none had the small hole, all the valve stems lined up with a lug nut, and all had riveted centers.

On my 71 M38A1CDN3 No stamping, no small hole, all the valve stems lined up with a lugnut and the centers were welded.

Quite a while ago an old guy :doh: like me now! but much wiser told me you could tell the M series military rim from the civy cj type by the fact that the valve stems line up with a lugnut on the military ones.

Of course I cannot verify any of this but I find myself peering at every vintage jeep, civy or military to see what the stems are doing and right now the aspect seems to be accurate. :salute:

We have to remember that the Cdn 3 was built in the USA, and not Canada like the other M38/M38A1 Cdns. That would likely make a difference in the source of some components like rims.
