LP2 Diff breather mounting block
 

I have a threaded mounting block on the inside of the armoured diff cover and I am wondering what it is for.
When I disassembled the vehicle, there was nothing mounted in/on it.
See the 2 pics for a better idea.

This is an early LP2, Dec 41.
It may be for the diff breather hose/pipe. The parts manual does indicate this as a superseded item to be found on early vehicles, there are no drawings.
Later LP2 & LP2A do not have this mounting block.
Can anyone confirm this?
Does anyone have reference pic to confirm/show how this is set up and installed?

Euan pointed me to text in one of the user manuals, pic attached from Euan.

Another collector has sent me a pic of his early BGC which has the early diff plug filled with weld and the diff breather modification done to the diff.

Can anybody else add to this?

my carrier has the standard Ford diff breather. Nothing speciaL.

Darrin, Somewhere back home, I have info on this.
The early british carriers had a pipe that went over to the tool board (an open breather that was supposed to act as an air lock when fording. This was I believe continued in The early Aussie and Kiwi built Aussie pattern carriers. They were later modified to a plug which had a brass grease fitting screwed into it. This would have held pressure in the axle (but would have better kept the water out)

There seems to be little activity on the forum around the LP1's that survive. It would be interesting to know how many survive of the 161??? originally built.
What is your serial number please?

Stuart, so as not to hijack Darrins thread anymore than I already have, can I prompt you to start a thread of your own showing us some photos of your machines? Some walk around photos and some inside photos of details would be great.
I have had a good look at the Pukapunyal one, and have a few photos of a couple of others (some I would ask before going public) but not everyone is as fortunate as I have been. In particular some of the non Australian carrier guys would like to see the differences that were built into the LP1's.
If you started a thread with an obvious title it would mean any newcomer would easily search and find info on the LP1.
Don't be concerned about what 70 years has done to them. I at least would like to see them, warts and all.
