WELBIKE in Australia

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I was lucky enough to find a welbike here in Australia! Although I have to assemble it the only parts missing are the fuel cap and the nut to hold on the handle bars. The frame number is 2308 and engine number XXE2561. Contract number on plate is 29423/S1649.

I have also managed to recovered the tank number as C5153108. I have read my bike to falls into a batch for an overseas order. Does anyone know what country that overseas order was for? Previous owner has had it since mid '60 in Australia and his father bought it from their "old neighbour".

The bike is still the British brown and I plan to get it assembled and going before I do it up. I do like it how it is so might just leave it in this condition.

Thanks
Darren

Wow

I covet, I'm envious.

(I'm far, far away)

Those parts can be made up in a local machine shop, Even if they are older British threads, the older machines should be able to cut them..

Did it come in a peach basket?

Hi Darren

Great find, quotes from the advertisement, Some assembly required, comes with woven peach basket, etc.

I once bought a motorcycle that somebody had taken completely apart and then could not put back together, and it literally came with in two peach baskets plus the frame and wheels. (They had lost some small parts)

This should be a great restoration project, just the thing to get around big MV rallies.

Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

Cheers Phil

Darren,

When I had a Corgi years ago I found the vintage bike people could find almost any part for the engine. There was an old British Bikes parts place in Elizabeth Street Melbourne who had pistons, rings etc. It was a bugger to start and lacked power but that was solved with a new crank case seal.

If you ride them on the dirt I guarantee you will be in pain (or need surgery) from a smashed knee which is the first thing to hit the ground!

Welbike purchased out if Australia

My present 1943 Welbike MK. II was purchased out of Australia and is now in Richmond, BC, Canada. It is 100% complete and I have the original combination tool and original manual. The original tires suggest that this Welbike was barely used. The fellow's uncle had bought it to drive between the house and his garage. The previous owner repainted it the wrong shade of green but happily he masked off the original markings on the tanks.

When I uncrated it, an old couple was walking past the house and the man made a wisecrack. I told him to come and sit on it for some photos as he was a WWII paratrooper veteran and he had fought in Holland. He was the first person in North America to sit in it. Oh, did I mention that he was a Fallschirmjaeger?

This Welbike is listed on my web site for sale. (2016 January) but I am in no hurry to sell it. I let my other two Welbikes go a few years ago. One ex-California Shriners one (painted blue) went to Ottawa. The other Welbike which was still in its original paint, but was very well used, ex-Ohio (I had to go and pick it up!) went to Holland. It has since been restored and taken to Arnhem on visits I believe.
