Dale,
the back rest section of armour has 4 holes, 1/2" dia and they sit inside the cut-out to access the air cleaner. I am not at home to access & measure mine (but checked on the weekend). Pic attached.

479-3, from memory as I have just made them, 1/4" thick (or 6mm), 1 1/4"to 1 1/2" wide and the length is long enough to fit between the 2 lower locating tabs welded to the centre bulkhead. Where this plate engages with the tabs, there should be ground a chamfer (on the forward edge) to accommodate. The upper/top part of this bracket has a curved radius at each end. There are a series of holes, countersunk for the wood screws that secure this bracket to the wooden backrest.

The wooden backrest was made from hardwood, horse hair and leatherette. I think 12-19mm ply should do the trick with hi-density foam.

Thanks again Darrin . I have the new laser cut armor plates without the four holes , but now I understand how it all works I was wondering about fastenings for the woods looks like 1/2 " round headed bolts I would need to make sure they where fix in place not to spin .. I'll wait if you don't mind for you to post a photo of your new 479-3 when you are at home on the weekend .. Dale

Dimensions and pics
1/4" thick
1 1/2" wide
15 1/2" long (but I would check this against your hull to ensure that it is long enough to engage with the locating tabs welded to the centre bulkhead)
the ground radius/curve is roughly 3/4" in on both sides of the upper corner.
pic will show where the hold are, but this is not that important as it is not seen.
Holes must be countersunk for screw heads
chamfer is about 1/2" in, this assists with locating into those tabs welded to centre bulkhead
