Images of the radio battery box interior

As per title folks, I am looking to see how the angle iron frame rails are configured, I know only the sides are riveted and the rear and bottom are bolted but wondered how the angle is positioned

I am also after the number plate and oil can holder if anyone has one going for sale.

I just got my POW holder with sign and brackets from midwest military: http://midwestmilitary.net/brencarri...l#topbrenpage4

I'm very happy with the detail of it, and once the rain subsides hope to get it painted and installed. Postage to the UK would be killer though.

Cheers matey, I got the email from you, which helps me loads !!!!

PS I envy your ME stowage holders..... I need to make those at some point after the show no doubt

Michael R. 24-06-14 23:30

PS: ME stowage photo credit belongs to J'Burg SA museum.

I Have that same "desert stowage" on my carrier project. Happy to take measurements if anyone wants to try to make a copy.

RichardT10829 28-06-14 20:09

yes please for me Jim !

The rivets on the battery box, are they 3/8 or 5/16 ?

Ben 28-06-14 20:38

5/16...........

Jim Burrill 28-06-14 20:49

will do!

May be a week before I can go out and noodle around with the carrier though..

Jim, the water bins on your carrier led to at least one reproduction set!! Here's the ones I made using yours as a pattern. They are fussy to reproduce with lots of different sized metal stock (all available luckily) and alignment of the supporting brackets. Then you have to go out and find four of those "$300" water cans.

Jim Burrill 28-06-14 22:33

Bruce, I would be more than happy to pay you to make another set! I am not a welder and I have seen your brilliant
work! I don't think many could do as good.

Are you game??

Jim

But you have originals!!! They might need a little straitening but from what I recall are well worth fixing. Still, if you want me to make you a set, I'd be OK with that (small payment for the great favours you've done for me in the past) or restore yours for you.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, I am assembling the box, and still have a few queries.

I thought (for some reason) that the rear plate that holds the POW holder on was held on with counter sunk screws ? It appears looking at Ross's pics again that it was infact riveted on ? Then the POW holder was screwed on ?

Is this the case ?

rob love 26-12-14 19:47

The back plate of the battery box is flush riveted on. The POW holder is held onto that with flat headed screws.

If you look at the 2nd photo in post number 3, you will spot the flush rivets.

RichardT10829 26-12-14 19:59

Yeah just noticed them Rob... Time to make a new snap for my riveting kit.

battery box photos

Hi Ritchie
Don't know if this helps but I have attached some photos of my battery box, including the underneath. Not as clear as it might be as not blasted yet. The bar for the rods that takes the wing nuts is riveted at its outer ends then tapped for the rod inboard of this. The photo of underneath might help. If you want me to measure anything let me know

RichardT10829 01-01-15 14:48

Cheers Rick.

I cannot see any pics ?

Sorry, technology defeats me every time. I think the file size is too big?
I will have to get my kids to help me out

Excellent thanks very much

RichardT10829 06-01-15 11:13

I have mocked up the basic walls of the box onto the hull, can anyone tell me what the measurement is from the edge of the sidewall of the box up to the top of the rear armour is ? Just so I can set my height before fishing fully ?

I still have to trim the angle iron etc etc... It's very rough at the moment.

Ben 06-01-15 12:20

Looking good. The scout sits flush with the centre height so I can't really help, I can measure as best I can to the side but it wouldn't be perfect. I'm sure someone with a UC will be along soon. Nice to see the rear plate is a touch taller as it should be, allows the lid to be flush once down on the sides.

RichardT10829 06-01-15 13:03

Thanks matey... Ideally a UC owner would be best. Just plodding on doing jobs on the thing, will be adding the ME stowage brackets when the time comes.

eddy8men 06-01-15 22:45

rich I just measured mine and it's 4 1/2". I also took a few pics but nothing that hasn't been posted before but if you need any more just let me know.

rick

RichardT10829 06-01-15 23:36

Rodge.... 4.5" from the top edge of the armour to the top edge of the radio battery box ?

Lynn Eades 06-01-15 23:51

Rich, do you have the holes in your rear armour already?

RichardT10829 07-01-15 00:00

Yes I had a 1:1 card pattern including the holes.

Lynn Eades 07-01-15 00:12

O.K. then, as a double check on Rick's, the top hole (box mounting angle) centre is 3/4" down from the top edge of the box (not the lid) Hope that helps.

RichardT10829 07-01-15 12:47

Thanks gents, I had my hole drilled in the wrong place on the angle bar, I re positioned it to the 3/4" which then set my height to 4.5" for the box wall.

Good news is my 1:1 card template was correct (phew)

actually once I really looked at the box in detail it has quite a lot going on, not as easy a fabrication as it looks.
keep up the good work

rick
