M3A1 scout car canvas roof

Hello all,

I am starting to look for a canvas roof for my White Scout Car.

Is there a source available in Australia or do I have to start looking overseas?.

It would be interesting to find out where other WSC owners obtained their canvas tops from.

Another option would be to get the dimensions or a pattern & I'll have a go at making one myself.

Anything would be better than driving "topless" through this New England winter - having the breeze in your hair isn't everything it seems!

Thanks
Robert.

Hi Robert,

I purchased my WSC top from John and Mary Worthing in England about 12 years ago. It was cheaper to buy from them than pay for the many straps and buckles here in Australia.

I do not know if they are still in business as I haven't seen their advertisement in the British military vehicle magazines lately.

The way it came to Australia is another story.

The Australian Army had their own version of the top as well. It had the webbing type buckles found on the type 38 webbing. That may be another way of doing it. I might even still have an Australian top somewhere but I am not sure just where it is.

Regards Rick

Worthings are still in business. Currently doing Diamond T cargo canvas for me. He is extremely busy this year though.

Beachwood Canvas, Stateside used to do excellent+++ work. They would be worth trying.

Edit: I see Darryl's post has it covered.

Robert.

At least you still have sufficient hair on your head for the wind to play with! I would have to hang my legs over the door to get the same effect!

Beachwood used to offer both a fully finished cover and a cheaper option with the basic canvas top completed, but the strap assemblies shipped unattached. This allowed the vehicle owner to get a perfect custom fit of the top to their specific vehicle done either themselves or at a local auto upholstery shop.

Hi Robert

Have you thought anymore about your idea of making a canvas for your Scout Car? I am looking at doing the same. I have a big piece of canvas that is going to waste.

Allied Forces (UK based) did mine - excellent job - no complaints.

I wonder if one of the scout car owners would be so kind to post a few photos of their canvas top please? That might give Robert and I a bit of a start on making something up. Perhaps also some general dimensions including the length of the various flaps.

I looked at a number of photos of the canvas top and I've always been curious about the design of the area around the doors. It looks like there is a flap that sits inside the door area, presumably for when the door armour is up?
