Book review: Drive for Freedom
This 135 page book, published in 1944 depicts how the UK motor industry changed over to making munitions and military vehicles and aircraft parts .
The book has propaganda overtones with the text giving rave reports of what has been done with so little time and resources and so on . No particular makers name is mentioned anywhere in the text. B&W pics show factories and vehicles . Many smaller garages , some in small villages , were called in to help out making parts . The author Charles Graves acknowledges the assistance of The Society Of Motor Manufacturers and Traders . The original price was 2/- AKA 2 bob or two shillings One interesting pic is of a 1940 Aust. Chev. 15cwt van in YMCA use in the Middle East. Copies of this book are easy to find on the ABE books web site http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/Bo...n%3Dww2++truck |
