Canadian 1 Gallon Can

4 Attachment(s)
A friend found this in a second-hand furniture shop in Surrey with some other 2-Gallon cans.
I wasn't sure what it was, but recognised the brass cap as being same style as more common 2 Gallon cans, so bought it.

I think the markings show it to be WWII Canadian. This one has the faint remains of "WATER" stenciled on it.
Where these cans used throughout the war on Canadian vehicles? Would they have been part of the kit on my 1943 C60 Wrecker?

Thanks

John,
That is the Canadian version of the British 1 gallon oil can. You will find stowage carriers for these on British trucks, even postwar they continued in use. Normally containing engine oil. The Australians also used the same pattern can and was part of the kit on their trucks in to the 60's. You may well have a carrier for this on your Chev.

Very nice...

General Steel Ware.....stamped C borad arrow..... normally used for engine oil....dated 1941......some re-soldering on handle

Sells at military shows in the neigbourhood of $80.

Good find.

Hi Richard - I've seen the smaller can holders on James Baxter's HUP, but my Chev only seems to be set up for 5 gallon "Jerrycans"

Thanks Bob - I got a bargain then. Thanks for info on the manufaturer

Around 44 many of the truck's stowage brackets went from taking the 2 galon POWs to using Jerry cans. Often there would still be a holder for the 1 gallon can since there was not a 1 gallon equivelent jerry can. Of course, this varied between vehicle set-ups.

Nice find. Seems like the one gallon can only gets found on a 10 to 1 ratio vs the more common 2 gallon can. We have a couple of the 4 gallon cans in the parts room here at work.....even rarer than the 1 gallon, but mostly due to their "flimsy" design.
