Quiet celebration

Hi All

Well D'Day 6th June 2015 has come and gone without a whimper here in Australia. I don't recall reading anything in the papers about it or on the TV News. I am sure it was not forgotten in Europe, Canada and in England. I wonder if that is because ANZAC troops did not take any significant part. As a Amateur Radio Operator I remembered and reminded a lot of people on the day whilst broadcasting on air .:remember:remember:remember

Cheers

Tony,

Same here, not in the news in The Netherlands - to my surprise. Usually there is a (short) news item and often they would air a war movie like The Longest Day.

Maybe it is because the 70th anniversary of Market Garden and the liberation of the Netherlands were so extensively covered during the past few months.

I know in France they don't forget, if only to keep the revenue stream from tourists going ;)

Hi Hanno

Good Point, you can over do it with to much coverage on TV and newspapers people stop looking and listening. We had the same problem with the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC Gallipoli landings.:remember:remember:remember

How soon we forget.

I was bitterly disappointed that, once again, there was nothing on the television and radio news reports here in Aus. We have time to make news from insignificant rubbish, but not for the single biggest human endeavour in the history of the world. I made a point of phoning the veteran I know, just to say Thankyou. Put the poor old dear in tears, it did. He thought no-one had remembered.

Memorial service

I attended a Bomber Command memorial service on Sunday and D-Day was definitely remembered as part of the service at the Melbourne Shrine.
A Channel 9 Cameraman was despatched to cover but some officious person would not let him in due to lacking a media pass. What an ASS.

There was a flyover of Harvards, Winjeel and CT4s in one formation and slightly later another formation of CT4s also flew over in very blustery wintry conditions.

Either I missed it or there wasn't much coverage in Canada, perhaps because it wasn't a multiple of 5 or 10 years since the event.

Interest fading......

Good point guys....didn't see much interest up Canada way. Except for the History Channel playing "Storming Juno" over and over again. This year, seems that all monies are being spent on the memories of WW1 although, I think that's running out of steam. Maybe the governments can't support 2 Wars. Even today with the G7 get together in Germany, you would have thought the leaders would have just taken that moment to "remember". My 2 cents for the thought...........Robert (Thanks for bring this up Tony!)

I didn't notice any media attention but it was clearly marked on my calendar.:remember
