I have 5 or 6 of these which I assume to be British manufactured Carrier wheels. The bearings were removed when I aquired them but I do have them.

Will they fit Canadian Carriers with appropriate bearings?

Neil, the bearings you need are : 6408 110 x 40 x 27mm they are available at budget for about £20 each. You have to remember the spacers are different between a Brit and canadian wheel. I have an anmo box full of both kinds you are quite welcome to sort through them if you are ever up this way.

Lynn, the spacers are of different profile and dimensions, the Brit wheels seem to have the bronze plain bearing or the ball bearing type un gaged. Spacers are therefore different for a caged 6408 bearing found in a Canadian wheel. There are loads of threads on here about this. When I'm next rebuilding wheels will put up some pictures to explain to help everybody.

Kevin, here's how I see it:
The wheels with ball bearings fitted all have their centres finished the same
1.There is the bronze solid bearing.
2.There are the early semi thrust bearings (bronze cage and stripable) Yes, these have a different spacer than,
3.The 6408 (previously 1408)metric series annular grooved standard ball bearing, which are found in both British and Canadian wheels with a common width spacer.
Let me know if I have this wrong.

Just to complicate the above is the early and late style seal arrangement.

If the wheel is a TL94, it should be fine On British and Canadian carriers given its a 43 casting I have a number of wheels that had previously been fitted with the bronze solid bush system.. They clean up and make wonderful coasters !

You can remove the bronze bushes from the wheels by removing the steel retainer ring. Then fit the later bearings without issue.... I have done this on a few wheels now, and we also did it on a wheel change during the Holland trip last year.

I know there are early wheels which have a smaller OD bearing, Kev had a set...

No clue, there was a discussion on here regarding them, from memory they were described as "early" wheels with different beat ding size.... I didn't pay it my full attention, Kevin posted it up from memory, he had a stack of wheels as I recall, but cannot be sure, I have slept since then.

I have never seen any reference to those wheels with the smaller sized bearing bores being from the usual Carrier range.
By that I mean: Carrier M.G., Scout, AOP, Cavalry, Bren, or Universal. All those mentioned ran wheels with the same bearing bore sizes, (including the Australian pattern )
The wheels certainly have a Vickers Carden Loyd look to them though.

Lynn/rich they were Carden Loyd wheels off a Carden trailer, mint rubber. Now used on a steam engine trolley.
