Tank Telephone box
 

Hi All,
Looking for information and possible original photo's of this tank telephone box I found at my favorite army surplus yard this spring.I believe it was mounted on the rear of a Centurion tank but not sure.Also what type of phone was mounted inside the box? Any help would be appreciated.

The phone boxes on British tanks were armoured so I don't think it's from a tank.

That would explain why I can't find any photo's of it on the back of any tanks! Now I have to figure out what it mounts to and what type of phone it would have had in it?

Just because it was made by a manufacturer of telephones does not mean it was made for a telephone. It just means that the bid to manufacture them was by a company that had the right resources to make the required item.

Shame there is not a prefix to the 1196A number, as that might have helped indicate it's useage.

Here is a photo of another one on ebay with a slightly different data plate. Could AD stand for admiralty pattern? This one is in grey, which might support naval use as well.

Aha! A little light begins to dawn.

It's Admiralty Pattern 1196A, and is probably intended to hold one of the 'Sound Powered' field telephones, which could be used inside the box or lifted out and positioned where you needed it.
