Ford Jailbar front bumper

Just after the war my father bought a new Ford truck.
I am restoring such a vehicle now.
These Jailbar trucks were built in Canada.
Most of these trucks delivered in the Netherlands had a square U formed bumper.

Some people suggest these vehicles were intended for the allied Africa operations. Then the year of manufacture must be about '43.

The truck I am restoring now:
serial number starts with 5G..., single reduction differential, v8 flathead
tires 7.50 x 20, 5 stud wheels, unpowered brakes

Are these trucks originally millitairy vehicles??

Can someone complete my puzzle

Jans,

Welcome to MLU!

It sounds like you have a Military Conventional Pattern (MCP truck). These were basically civilian trucks with some military features like the push bar, military lighting and of course military paint. See the thread Ford 3 ton MCP dump truck for a nice example.

Can you post pictures of the truck you are restoring?

Hope this helps,
Hanno

The above truck now resides in my line-up along with another for parts.

We have the identical dump box (although extended post-service) on a right hand drive Dodge in the museum here in Shilo.

atatched 2 pictures.

The green truck is mine. As the bumper was missing I made a (bad) copy.

The red truck shows an original square bumper.

Kind regards,

Jans

That's a lovely truck, Jans.

Why do you say "bad"....size and shape seems correct, only the extra holes seem missin(?). Did you manage to find the correct bumper profile here in Holland?

Thanks,

I bought an Inch size in the US.
For free I got some space in a container transport.
I did not yet copy the hole pattern and the lenght is not correct.

Theo Castricum from Winkel told me, these Jailbar Fords were originally built for the North Africa operations from the Allies.
But that was in '42. The after war Canadian Fords have serial numbers starting with 5g....... That must be a year '45. ( starting july "44)
But were they built for military purposes??

Jens, like stated above, this type of truck was built as a Military Conventional Pattern truck:

They were used by the armed forces in many theatres of war, and production continued after WW2 for civilian use.

Thanks all of you.
My questions are solved now.
I will use this information for my site www.dutch-ford-jailbar-register.simpsite.nl
