Mike, the 1939 Chev ute has Victorian civil rego (AX-239). Was it borrowed or impressed?

We had a sedan rego No. AH-879 when I was 8 years old. It replaced a 1925 Dodge '4' and we thought we were the luckiest people in town (Yea).

with the red cross on the door and nurses in the back I think you will find the ute belongs to the Red Cross Organisation hence the civilian number plates. :)

I am tending to agree with Cliff: a Red Cross vehicle carrying a group of VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) women, who were members of, and organised by, the Red Cross Society rather than the Armed services.

Impressed vehicles did not, as far as is known, retain their civilian registration, but were registered with an ARN before issue to a unit.

The AOMC ( Association of Motoring clubs ) here in Vic. hold the old registration records , well , I should say , a part of the records . If you pay them a exhorbitant fee, they will look up your rego number . Sadly , the most informative part of the records , the owners details , were all destroyed . All you get is the colour , change of rego number, engine number and any change of engine details which is next to useless.
