Difficult to make out in a black and white photo, but there's high probability of being HQ vehicle of a Divisional Signals unit attached to 1, 2, or 3 CID.

I agree with Jon. "H" section was 2nd company, 1st Div sigs. Their first role after arriving in England was HQ support for Div. anti-tank regiment. They moved around a bit and ended up with providing sigs for the Divisional arty commander. He had his own communications network separate from other div signals.
By end of 1941 arty div. was pulling in sig units from other areas and growing. In this photo it looks like he's just put on a new decal. Stationed mostly in Surrey/Sussex. |
vehicle is a Cab 12 Chevrolet C15A or C30

Divisoinal Signal Markings
Tim,
I have a page on Divisional vehicle markings for a Canadian Signals unit here: http://www.rcsigs.ca/index.php/Vehic...sional_Signals Unfortunately it doesn't have a H6 listed and says that the markings would be Artillery based. I see now that I didn't record where I found this info or what date it was effective so perhaps this was after the time of your pic. I will go hunting for it and any other info again..... From the darkness of the Div patch, my guess is 2 Canadian Infantry Division. 1 Div was a red colour which I think would show even in the b/w picture and 3 Div was a French Grey colour, again it would show lighter I'd say. Cheers, Joe |

Marking Instruction
The marking instruction I referred to (2 posts up) is dated August 1941.
Signal Instruction No 57 from 1 Canadian Divisional Signals (27 Mar 1944) does indicate that H* tactical signs were allocated to H Section of 2 Company. Joe |

The H6 is just a unit block #.
Here is a list of them for the RHLI per April 1941 war diary. |

Here's an outline of armoured div. signals regiment. Infantry outline is quite similar.
