Sexton grenade box
The sexton has two brackets described as for grenade boxes. Anyone have information on what these grenade boxes are? Jesse.

Jesse.
Can you post pictures of the racks with some dimensions? The grenades would likely be the No. 36 Mills Bomb, being a Commonwealth vehicle. The only such grenade box I have ever run across was a wooden one, with a hinged lid. I cannot recall the number of grenades stored in it but half were on either side and the central section held a tin holding the fuses. Cheers, David |
9 inches wide. 7 1/2 inches long. I removed the other bracket as it was a severe trip hazard.http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/KIMG1073.jpg

The No. 36 Grenade Box I saw was about twice the length of that bracket, Jesse. I suspect it was a shipping chest used to move the grenades from point of manufacture to the location of the primary users. At that point the fuses would be installed in the grenades and they would be placed into whatever storage items required. At that point the chest was very likely tossed aside.
Not that familiar with the crew requirements for something like the Sexton, so anyone with artillery experience please fill in the details. Would the Sexton crew be issued with standard fragmentation grenades like the No. 36 Mills for defensive purposes? Another option coming to mind could be smoke grenades for cover. On a similar note, what would the Mortar Crew in a Universal Carrier be equipped with as far as grenades go? Perhaps the same box was issued in both situations? David |
Two ready to go grenades per steel box in carriers. Usually about 3 boxes per carrier.
