Not quite right this time Cliff. It is certainly a GMH Chev built ute but 1941 or 1942.

The 1940 Chev had separate headlights mounted on top of the mudguards as well as the parking lights. The 1940 also had running boards which this one does not have. That Ute had the headlights in the guards and the horizontal parkers below the lights. This was introduced in 1941.

Here is my 1940 Chev staff car for front end comparison.

you are correct on the year. I googled 1940 Chev Ute and the photo was captioned 1940 but looked like the one above.

Still an Australian Military version ute though. :thup2:

Wrongly captioned on Google as a 1940.

Ute

Yes it is a 1941/42 military ute

Years ago , when we had the club XMAS trip up to Mywee, Jim took us all to a wrecking yard somewhere in the sticks, it was way off the beaten track. There was one of these utes in the yard, in very nice shape . I asked the owner of the yard, a elderly chap, how much, he said 50 bucks ! He told me it came from Tocumwal airfield , he said he actually saw the car in use with Americans driving it.

The Holden Woodville body production lists: CHEV AMF coupe utility - 98 of these being built in 1942 . Are these the utes in question ? The cab probably is a botch up of a sedan body , similar to the 1941/42 Ford ute for sale at Geelong, but I am not certain.

I do have pics of another survivor in QLD . At least one was restored in NSW , where it is now , I don't know.

A pic of one of these utes issued to the RAAF has: 203762 on the bonnet. Source, the History of Holden book, Norm Darwin. The book also has a pic captioned " Chevrolet special Coupe Utility with gas producer. Roof was made from hand formed parts and welded as a patch work affair "
