Chev CMP muffler

The first picture shows a NOS chev cmp muffler and pipe. The muffler is a cylinder twenty inches long and five inches in diameter with coaxial pipes. The muffler slips on over the end of the pipe and the perforations in the pipe form part of the muffler.

The second picture shows the original exaust system from my HUP and the nearest my local muffler shop could come to it. The muffler is a tractor muffler from Princess Auto (cat # 2440059). It is the right length and configuration but the cylinder is only four inches in diameter.
The catalog from "chevs of the forties" shows a sketch of the right muffler but on delivery it is a short oval crossection with offset pipes.

Tractor mufflers

Coincidentally, just the other day I was eyeballing those tractor mufflers at Princess Auto as a potential replacement for my HUP's rusted out unit, which is so long it passes the point where the tailpipe should make its 90-turn to the left. I've also noticed Dirk Leegwater has suitable looking mufflers and have seen likewise at some of the old-truck restoration websites.

Any other good sources or alternatives to the Princess Auto stock?

Would these be the same basic dimension for a Ford muffler?

Thanks,
Hanno

I seem to remember the Chev mufflers are 5inch diameter and Ford 6inch (?) Length is about the same, but Ford had domed ends on the muffler, Chev flat ends as per Johns picture. I think there are some pics of the Ford mufflers on the servicepub CD rom.

Alex,

Basic dimensions shown on the sticker of the replacement muffler Rob posted are nearly right for Ford (6" diameter, 18" length, 2" inlet and 1-5/8" outlet pipes).

I'm not too concerned about original domed ends etc. One can buy "Ford script" mufflers etc., but those things come at a price!
