Starter switch
 

I'm sure this must have come up on here before but I can't find anything by searching

I need a new mechanical starter switch for a Mk II Canadian Carrier. The switch is shown in the first pic below. Anyone have a part number?

Does a new switch come with the insulating plate and copper contact bar that are bolted to the casing, as shown in the second pic?

Also, has anyone wired from the small lug shown in the second pic to the coil negative terminal to bypass the ballast resistor while cranking?

As for the bypass, I think you would need to put a diode in the bypass wire so the starter motor doesn't try to draw current from the distributor.

Similar but not exactly the same. The sheet metal cover on the Carrier switch has a kick-out at the push-button end that looks like it is needed to cover the nut and stud on the casing shown above.

Ah, I see that now. Perhaps you could gut the chevy switch (or any of the many similar switches used on tractors) and move new contacts into the original switch.

Doesn't have to be a diode for the wire of course. You could go old school and use a relay. But there are diodes small enough that you can almost hide them within the sheathing for the wire.

Personally, I use a 12 volt battery on my starter, and the 6 system merely runs the distributor, a solenoid, gauges and lights. Incredible starting without the load of the starter on the system.

Malcolm, these were common back in the day. What about cleaning yours up?
Don't sand it, file it. I'd guess the other contacts are not badly burned. You could judiciously re shape the one we've seen if there is not enough travel?
If you check out the part number you will then know if they are special to the MkII* or if they are common to commercial stuff. I assume it is an Autolite starter? when you have a part number, try mr google. Good luck!

It's not the contacts that are the problem, they're in reasonable shape, it's the insulating sheet and washers that are falling apart.

I'll get one of those Chevy switches and see if I can use the parts as you suggest.

Lynn, which part number do you mean? There is no number on the switch and I don't have a parts list for this Carrier (at least I can't find one in our "library").

Had a quick look at the mk2 manual and sure enough, no part number for the complete switch.......just 20 numbers for each and every piece in the switch. There was a head number, but it reads switch housing or something like that. Hard to say if it's for the whole switch or just the housing.

Pretty sure the chev switch will give you the insulating washers and contacts you will need to freshen up the original.
