Tank park and museum ! Canex

I totaly agree with you my friend. The tank park and museum are certainly worth a visit. The Mk1 and Mk 2 Carriers inside are very original so are the CMP trucks. A real treat . I consider myself lucky to have been tasked here . Cheers . Robert

Major Radley-Walters Firefly

Friends, i saw a Sherman identified to this most important war hero. Is it really his or is it just a Firefly identified to him ? I was a bit taken aback when i realised his name was on it. Almost caused a traffic accident . Did a 180 degree turn into uncoming traffic . I was on my way out to the airport .

Firefly

Good thing you did into get into an accident as the Firefly markings are pure fiction.

Robert Bergeron 11-09-16 20:16

Thanks Ed. There are a few famous Shermans that were rapatriated like "the Bomb" from the Fusiliers in Sherbrooke . Unless you tell me this one is also a fantasy... That would break my heart though. That would be really painfull . Robert

Robert.

Things have moved around a bit since I was visiting Bordon, but at that time, there was some speculation the Firefly on display was based on a Canadian Grizzly. There was also a Sherman parked on the East side of Worthington Park, facing the park, close to what was then the RCAMC Museum. It came back from overseas and there was some significance to it's being returned. It had been knocked out by an anti tank round, left side, driver's position and had been patched and put back into service. You could still see traces of the impact cone from the solid shot round showing along the edges of the patch. Cannot recall the importance of it's being brought back to Canada, however.

Famous Shermans

The Sherbrooke Sherman is a SWW veteran as is the GGFG one in the CWM. Lots of post-SWW M4A2E8s posing as wartime or Korean War tanks so don't get too excited about the markings.

Robert Bergeron 12-09-16 02:10

David : thank you for your reply but i did not notice this particular tank but there are many spread all over the place. I saw my first Churchill and Chaffee. A treat. Ed : thank ( tank ) goodness. I played inside the "Bomb" when i was a kid in the 60's . I could elevate and traverse the gun . I got hooked on Canadian military history then. Sigh of relief .. it is original SWW.

Sherman

That's the same one that spent 5 years sitting inside a High school in Toronto where the auto shop guy thought he was going to restore it , the guy had NO clue and was more interested in Hockey than anything else, I was very worried that it would come back with all kinds of things missing, then one day it was back home and safe , for now! by the way Griz with Firefly turret,
