Quoting, Ad Nauseum
Hanno, there seems to be a growing trend to copy the previous post, so as to reply to it.
Is this necessary? To me it is a waste of storage space and complicates my re-visiting of previous posts. I can usually work it out. Do you have any advice on this? |
I often will use the quote feature, especially on a thread that starts to get very involved or else meanders a bit, as MLU threads often do. The advantage to the quote is that there is no confusion as to which post the reply is to. I have seen threads where confusion and sometimes even hurt feelings happen because of the lack of the quote.
I will often shorten the quote to just the relevant part that I am replying to. I like the quotes. |
I actually agree (mostly) with both of the above.
Quoting a specific point or phrase can do wonders for clarity, while quoting complete posts (which may have quoted other replies in turn) rarely helps. As with so many things in life, a little common sense goes a long way. |

Surely, that is the key, just quote the part you need to and lose the pictures from your quote. |

I does help in find the specific bit of text /subject one is referring to. If the reply is generic to the thread, quoting is not necessary. Hanno |

The added bonus is that you can click on this button Attachment 86592 to jump back to the quoted text. Hope this helps. Hanno |
