Derk's WWII jeep tools

5 Attachment(s)
Hi All,
I have been working on putting together a jeep tool kit list for my 1943 Ford GPW and over time have gathered most of them. I have duplicate tools and I would like to confirm which one's are proper WWII that I should keep and dispose of the rest.
-First item is the spark plug wrench & handle. Can anyone tell me if both are WWII or post war?
The left one (unpainted) is marked; 41-W-3335-40
The right one (painted black) is marked;APCO
MOSSBERG
ATTLEBORO,MASS.
U.S.A.
-I also have 2 types of jacks. Neither one are marked.I believe the rectangular base is the one I want to keep as this is the type shown in the WWII jeep tool kit list photo.
-The 2 types of Wrench-wheel bearing nut tools I have are for a Willys and Ford. I will keep the Ford GPW one.

-I have 2 types of Wheel nut wrenches. One is marked 41-W-3837-25. I am assuming this is a Willy's wrench? The other one is unmarked and longer although I think the same nut size. Is it possibly WWII military,Post-war or civilian?
-I also found a HERBRAND 8" crescent wrench. Is this proper for WWII or do I need to find another brand of crescent wrench?

I have 3 types of SCHRADER tire guage.
-The first one is marked TRUTEST SPECIAL U.S. PROPERTY ORDNANCE DEPT with a star JAN 45 and has a square numbered guage construction.
-The middle one is marked U.S. PROPERTY ORDNANCE DEPT with 8-G-620 and has a flat numbered gauge construction.
-The bottom one is marked SERVICE TIRE GUAGE U.S. PROPERTY OMC with 8-G-620 and has a flat numbered gauge construction.

I have 2 types of ALEMITE grease guns. Models 5585 and 6556. I think the model 6556 one would be correct for my tool kit. What is the other model grease gun with the solid handle used with?

You are far more meticulous than me!

As to the tire pressure gauges, the bottom two with the loose collar and ring as familiar to me from the Canadian army in the 1970s. Tools don't wear out riding around in a tool bag, checking tire pressure once or twice a week, but only in active training seasons. The rest of their lives are spent quietly staying warm and dry inside a locker or a tool box.

A couple pair of pliers. I like the UTICA TOOLS pliers as they are nicely marked but can anyone tell me if they would be correct era for WWII? The other set I am not sure what brand they are, just a makers stamp and MADE IN U.S.A.

I have 4 of the open end wrenches collected so far. None of them are matching but once I have all of them,I can continue to look for matching brands. I still need to find a #28D.

The 2 auto adjusting wrenches I have are a Billings 9'' and the other one only has an H stamped in it and is 11'' long. Although the 9'' BILLINGS wrench is nicely marked, I see in the parts manual it calls for an 11'' wrench so does anybody know what brand the H stands for?

This summer I was lucky enough to find an IRWIN screwdriver.
I picked up an EAGLE oil can at the MVPA convention but seems sloppy in the oil can holder on the firewall of the jeep. It may not be the proper one or my reproduction oil can holder may be out? Anybody know the proper base measurement of jeep oil can so I can compare to mine?
I also found a ball peen hammer this summer at our favorite army surplus store. No makers mark on it. Was there a certain hammer brand issued with the WWII jeep?

I have 2 tire pumps. The first one I found was pretty rough and eventually found a better condition one that I bought a replacement hose kit for. The rough one has nice markings on the bottom,US QMC 305592 WALKER MFG. CO. 19 RACINE,WIS U.S.A while the nicer pump has US ORD and only a makers mark on it. Would this be post war production or still proper for WWII?

I have had in my collection a 1945 dated jeep tool roll that came in handy when I started to put together this tool kit. A little greasy but ads character!
I don't know if there were very many different variations of horsecocks for the WWII jeep. This is a nice condition one I found and hope it will be proper for the jeep tool kit?
I also found reproduction Maintenance and Parts list manuals for display.

Some reproduction tools I bought to add to the tool kit are the Wrench-fluted socket head screw, Wrench-hydraulic brake bleeder screw, Wrench-drain plug and the Puller-wheel hub.

I lucked out last summer stopping at a roadside antique yard and in one of the semi trailers was a pile of tire chains. I picked out a couple matching chains that looked like they would fit the jeep and when I got home, they went on perfectly! I now need to find a reproduction tire chain bag to display with the chains once my tool kit is complete.

The Fire extinguisher I have is a GENERAL QUICK AID but I also have WWII Canadian DND marked one's I can also use.
I also picked up a reproduction engine crank handle.

So that is what I have collected for my tool kit. If I can get help picking out the proper tools to keep,I will dispose of the rest of my spares. I will still need to find the #28D open end wrench and a reproduction tire chain bag. If anybody has these items surplus to their needs,I would be interested. The only one that has repro tire chain bags in stock is Peter DeBella jeep parts but the $35.00 US shipping to send a $30.00 US bag was more than I was willing to pay! I had one in my hands at the last MVPA convention but didn't think I would ever find a set of chains so didn't buy it! Oh well, there's more out there!
Thanks for any help the members can give me.

The picture of the fire extinguisher reminded me of a question I've asked before. Now that carbon tetrachloride is a no-no, is there a modern replacement fluid that can be used to refill these extinguishers and make them functional? It's all very well to have a decorative extinguisher, but it has always worried me that, in the event of a fire, someone might waste precious seconds trying to make an empty extinguisher work. The last time I asked, the answer was "no", but technology progresses, so it seems worth asking the same question every few years.

Found the answers to my own questions!

Well after a busy summer with no time to research anything, I posted my photo's here looking for answers to my tool kit questions but after logging onto the G503 website forum yesterday, found a whole thread dedicated to WWII jeep tool information. There were all the answers to my questions and more.

Looks like some of my tools are right and some I still have to find. And the search continues!

I picked up an EAGLE oil can at the MVPA convention but seems sloppy in the oil can holder on the firewall of the jeep. It may not be the proper one or my reproduction oil can holder may be out?

Hi Derk,
Its probably the oil can, that's not a correct one for your Jeep. I have seen that you have come across the tool list on the G503. This will be you friend.

Dave

Hi Dave,
Yes it turns out that my oil can is 1/4'' smaller than the correct oil can for the jeep. I will have to look closer at the next one I come across to not make the same mistake again. I hope to make it to the 2017 MVPA convention this year to find a few of the tools and items I am still missing for my tool kit list. The convention is in Cleveland,Ohio and only 18 hours 37 minutes (1,954 kms) drive from my place so nice and close. After I posted my tools here I had time to do some more searching and came across the G503 post on proper WWII tools for the jeep and that answered all my questions and more!

Also the oil can should have the brand name stamped, not embossed.

Ah!

Thanks Frank, another thing to look for when trying to find a proper oil can for my jeep. Was going to go to the MVPA convention this year and even had Rob on board but I want to build a shop this summer so decided to stick close to home and concentrate on saving for it instead.

Building a shop??

Go big! Cheers Rob

Rob,
I plan for a 30 x 40 foot shop. That's the largest I can build on the property without getting a variance. If the shop isn't big enough to store all of my projects then I will just have to get rid of some of them!
I picked up this set of pliars a week ago. G503 lists the manufacturer as wartime but CeeTee Jamestown,NY and mine are simply CeeTeeCo CRESCENT USA. Not sure what the difference is there. Possibly changed the stampings after the war?

Derk,

Very nice collection, some great finds!

Was the Canadian tool kit was the same as the tool kit supplied with jeeps supplied to US Forces? I only ask because the tool, spares etc - the Vehicle Outfit List (VOL) - provided with jeeps issued to Australian forces was substantially different to the kit listed in the US-supplied parts & operators manuals. There was some commonality, of course, but many items were supplied from local (Aust) manufacturers and made to Australian Army requirements/standards.

Good Question.

Hi Mike,
I haven' looked into what type of Tool kit the jeep would have had once it came into Canadian supply but I would imagine the jeeps would have come with all of it's original tool kit when transferred over to Canadian hands. As far as the American tool kit,I can't imagine what other tools the Canadian military would have added that the original tool kit supplied would have been lacking. I can see if an American tool was missing that it would have been restocked with a Canadian brand. I am sure other MLU members out there can answer this question better than I can. I basically searched for whatever tool was on the original layout diagram and am almost there. I have always liked to display the tool kit in front of my military vehicles when I put them on display. I am still working on my Ford Universal Carrier Mk 1 tool kit and a complete tool kit for my Ford 3 ton CMP ambulance yet. I think it takes longer to find all of the original tools for a vehicle longer than to restore it!
Let's see if anybody else can clarify what a Canadian tool kit consisted of?
Regards,Derk

Hi Derk,

Just been catching up with your thread.
About your Grease Gun, I don't think that either are correct for your GPW. I had a thread on the G503 about a GG that i have, this is it,
http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=272329

It may give you an insight. I have just bought another GG with bakelite handle that's not correct either

Keep up the good work,

Dave
