C15A Cab 12 Speedo Question

1 Attachment(s)
Hi All
I am slowly progressing with the truck, and have found an old
speedo cable. Both ends screw onto the Cmp speedo and the
bottom housing. This cable will work but is a bit tight,
Does anyone know the proper length for this application.
The cable I have is 57 inches long. It will at least
be a big help if I have to have a new one made.
Do these cables go out to the front on the enginge before
bending around?
Thanks
Terry

Be very careful of routing of cable FIRE DANGER

Hi Terry

Whatever the original lenght you will probably want to make it longer so that you can route it so as to avoid contact with the wiring harness. Danger points are the brake light switch, starter switch and and the starter cable. Also make sure that you also use all the cable clamps to besure the cable stays where you put it and doesn't shift which is what happend in my case.

I had a wiring fire with new harness and new speedo cable on my Pat 12 C60L. Only good luck was that I was standing next to the truck when it started, parked in the shop with the other two trucks. Could have lost everything if I had not hit it with the CO2 aND dis connected the battery. It nearly burned through the flex fuel line.

When I replaced the cable after the fire I put a lot more insulation on the speedo cable.

Will look if I have good pictures of how I ended up routing the cable.

Good advice Phil, I should have an extinguisher on board!
I think I will have a longer cable made , but would be nice
to know original routing

Cable length.....

Hi Terry

The cable I had made was 81 inches long and was copied from the one in place that was all worn out and rusted......... and yes the cable has to come over the side of the engine down to the floor and curve to the frame.

.... and based on my installation you will need all of the 81 inches.

Gathering more information

Hi Terry

My notes on the speedo show Pat 12 as being 87.5 inches for the outside jacket with the inner cable being 1 inch longer. Pat 13 are 95 inches outer.

Will gather more information looking for photos of disassembly of my Pat 12 see if I have good photos showing the routing.

Cheers Phil

This is so good to know Phil, I will try to get a cable made
as soon as I get to the city. The one I have is definetly too
short.
Look forward to a pic.
Cheers

Sorry no photos of correct route

Hi Terry

Went back through my photos of restoring my Pattern 12 hoping I had a good shot of the routing of the speedo cable before I started restoring. Found that I don't have any, in fact my speedo cable was loose down the side of the engine when I got my truck with the little cable clamps still on it but not screwed down. This is probably why I got my routing wrong and had a wiring fire as a result.

Sorry could not be of more help.

There is some mention of rerouting the cable in one of the Service Bulletins but it seems to be referring to the early Pattern 13 Cabs.

Cheers Phil
