Restoring a WWII Petrol Can

I just came across a WWII British gas can that needs to be repainted and re-stenciled. What would be the best type of paint to use for a project like this (oil based vs. water)? Also, does anyone already have a good color formula for the paint that they can suggest. Thanks in advance.

Petrol can colour

Hi Rob

Most paints we use these days are synthetic based, but not acrylic.

The colour you need is Light Olive drab, the British War office code for this is G3, it is almost identical to US light olive drab as used 1940 to 1943.

You don't say where you are n the world, but any MV parts supplier will be able to supply you, most now do handy spray cans which would be more appropriate for your project.

Hope this helps

Pete
