HELLO ALL
Just been given an air raid siren the big one that is . any ideas and uses for its use . it does make a lovely alarm clock and you can chop up carrots and runner beans with it as long as you wear ear defenders so any other ideas for the use of .

Well, the warning siren at the Swords and Ploughshares Museum has quite a few uses, mainly:

Annoying neighbours (within 30 miles);
Scaring off rabbits;
Proving which gunner is deafer;
Drowning out Mike; and
Attracting By-Law Officers (never know what they want - can't hear them...).

You could use this concept as a Heat exchanger on your muffler as used in the CMP Arctic version..
Good as long as the engine was running..But to keep a little heat on while you were parked would be a little expensive,with todays fuel prices..

Yes i have thought about that concept but also thought about the fuel so went for gas the trouble im having at the moment is bending the aluminium round it keeps springing back
even though i bent it round a formerand held it for a fortnight out in the sun and still it tries to spring back needed putting through some rollers i expect i wonder if rolf has looked inside his . he has the real thing and it must be the only one i reckon.

That gave me a laugh i remember those sirens they did sound for miles especialy at night they seemed to rummble on for ages when switched off this one was bolted to the roof of a church im told although i remember them up on tall posts we have not put power to it yet so well see what happens when we do its three phase so cant use it at home just as well i supose and like you say the by laws are there to stop people with sirens

When you have your aluminum shaped,warm it up with an oxy-acetylene flame,heavy on the acyetlene so that it is a large smokey flame..go all over the metal quickly and let cool...Then the aluminum will keep the shape and remove the original "memory"..
Use this method for any aluminum sheet shaping ,weather it is body panels for aircraft or autos..
Let me know how it turns out..
It works immediately as it cools so you will know right away..
Try it on a small piece first until you are comfortable with the process..

Hi Vic,

One can have hours of fun and meet all sorts of folk by toying with such a powerful device. Being a cold war brat, I remember living on northern Canadian air bases/stations and going thru the checklist for the great Russian air attack. I suppose we were too young to ask why we were going thru the drills, and at that time, one didn't ask teacher questions, one answered the questions.

I suppose it is nice that most folk have no idea of what the siren's purpose was and the paranoia it produced in the western adult population in the early to mid '60s. As a child, I was blissfully unaware of the Red Threat, and didn't understand why anyone would want to flatten places like CFS Holberg. For all I knew, the "damned Commies" could have been a softball team that played at the base...

Anyway, it is nice to see our Cold War relic (the siren, not Mike)silently (mostly) guarding the entrance to the museum.

this siren has heaters on to protect against frost when we run it up ill record the sound for you im hoping my M5 generator will power it at a rally at some time as its three phase i may be lucky
ill either be popular or strung up on the nearest recker.

Yeah, great idea...I just had a huge face to face argument with Sunray about what the time was, GMT wise.

He insisted that it was -5 in our area (DST). I, in turn, insisted that it was -4 (Q), vice -5 (R).

I finally got on the phone to Frank Misztal, being a recently retired Sigs guy, who confirmed that I was correct.

Sunray, being the pouty person he is, felt miffed and soon after departed.

I know about GMT being 1 hr ahead until next Sunday 31st when it really will be GMT here.

Preferably outside Mr. Notton's bedroom window, about 0300 LOCAL (if you need directions, I can provide).

Then send me the siren collect; I'll do the same at Mr. Skagfeld's place, then return said siren accordingly. Honour will be satisfied.

Jif knows that the correct time is not really required as somewhere in the world, at any time, a MLU inhabitant will be reading the forum at any local time, morning, afternoon, night. Clocks are meaningless.
