Limbers, Limbers, Limbers

Just picked these up from supply yesterday. They were recently recovered from the ranges in Petawawa. They are limbers for the 4.5 howitzer. Two of them are in very decent shape, and it looks like a couple of them got "tanked".

We got another limber from them a couple years back, but for the 18 pounder. It's out back in the compound, and the hubs are there. Some blast damage on that one as well.

I photographed these limbers in the Petawawa training area back in 1981 and even at that time they were in pretty bad shape.

Nice photos Ed. I would imagine those may well be the two stacked on the pallet. When time permits I'll have to check them for simlar shrapnel wounds.

It should be easy to make a real good one out of the two reasonably complete ones. One of them only has slight shrapnel damage. I even saw some nice paint samples on one of drawbars. But in the end the decision on whether to restore or preserve will fall on the curator. Personally, I don't believe that damage outside of it's original service needs to be preserved.

If the hubs form the 18 pounder limber are the same, we may have those cast to make up wheels for these. As well, another museum has expressed interest.

At least you have them back under control, and can make some informed decisions on how much effort to invest in their condition.

Good luck!

(And congratulations on getting tenure [they can't fire you because you know too much, and nothing will happen without you])
