British steering box Does anyone have NOS seals for the British steering box, or has anyone had any made and has spares? (Bishop make) |
|
Seals Hi Lynn, what is special about them, have you got some measurements to explain? Cheers Andrew |
|
I think they are cork seals. |
|
Andrew it has a felt seal . I hand cut a replacement, but it still leaks. I wonder if it should have been leather? I didn't record the measurements. It's the worm seal behind the steering wheel. It's held in by the steel washer- not the best set up I've ever seen. |

according to the workshop manual it is a cork seal and that matches Bishop steering boxes on lorries of the period that I've worked on, where the sector shaft comes out of the casing. |

 Mine leaks a little, I just opted for a thicker grease/oil. |

Thanks guys. Cork makes more sense than felt. I'll try again, and find a heavy lube. |

Lynn, I can give you some 140 weight oil I have got for the Morris to put in it. To replace my steering box seal I cut a strip of cork and wrapped it round the sector shaft with a diagonal cut for the joint and pushed it into the housing. It has a light oil in the box and hasn't leaked but I am still going to change it to 140. Terry. |

Thanks Terry. That's a good idea. Now to find some cork...... |
