M38A1 Tow Bar
Just wondering if there was ever an official tow bar provided for the M38A1 jeep?
Perhaps a detailed CFTO to manufacture one? I am thinking RCEME must have had something for towing and recovery. Would like to have something to facilitate easy movement of my Jeeps rather than a trailer, especially for trips to and from the paint shop, garage etc. |
We always used the standard A-frame, which was usable on everything from the Jeep to the APCs. They used to be fairly thin, but then in the 80s they came out with a thicker one. Those are the ones you see on ebay all the time these days.
What I used to do was take some of the bent a-frames, and cut them down to about half the size for use with the lighter vehicles like the Jeeps and the LSVW. It saved a lot of hernias, but was not an official modification. |

Didn’t Princess Auto flog an A-Frame of sorts a few years back, set up for a ball hitch that some of the guys adapted for jeep towing? David |

I found an A-Frame at Princess 10-12 yrs ago when I first got my M38A1. Similar to this one, https://www.princessauto.com/en/deta...ar/A-p8041550e I've used it to pull start the Jeep. The only issue was it needed two 7/16 holes drilled in the bumper to attach two heavy gauge plates as the joining surface.
The military one has a heavy pin that adjusts for telescoping the length. It also has a complicated, but effective, bicycle type chain and bolt tie down assembly to attach to a square bumper. |

I have the small one and have been using it for years, these are very hard to find now,
