Canadian R209
 

Hello,
Does anyone know when and by which service branch the R209 Reception Set was used in the Canadian Army?
It is labelled R209 C1, NSN 5820-21-101-9064.
WftW shows it to be the R209 Mk1, as it has two dessicators on the front panel.

I don't have an exact date but I suspect it was a carry over from the late 1940s. When the CAOR was in Germany they adopted wireless sets to British scales. These include sets like C42, C45, C11/R210, etc. Often paired with the WS53 xmtr it would be used by RCSigs.

What is interesting is the NCB (21) of the NSN. This is the country code for Canada. It is usually assigned to the country who introduces it to the NATO supply chain. Being a British set I would have expected "99".

Nice to hear from you again. I am late with this reply as I wanted to ask a fellow I know who is posted to the local base regarding the NSN.
He told me that as the units were rotated through CAOR, they would bring back equipment with them.
The R209 was used with the WS52 CDN.
Due to the country code of 21, he indicated that some modification would have been made that was not in the British sets.

The NSN corresponds to a modified R209 which was called the R209 C1. A Canadian EME spec sheet dated 10 Jan 1969 says that it retained all the operational capabilities of the R209 but modifications included a voltage stabilization and temperature compensating capacitors in the local oscillator and a transisterized power supply which operated from a nominal 24 vdc power supply (the R209 Mk 1 (ZA-25433) used a 6v power supply).
